Executive Summary: Nursing Summit 2002
Curriculum of the Future: 
Moving Ahead Together

The 2002 Nursing Summit began with faculty discussion regarding the BSN curriculum and to identify clinical competencies in each of the practice areas that are appropriate and essential outcomes for the future-focused baccalaureate graduate. The faculty were divided into the following Faculty Practice Groups:

  • Acute Care/Adult Health – Dr. JoAnne Herman reporter
  • Maternity/Women’s Health – Dr. DeAnne Messias reporter
  • Pediatrics/Children’s Health – Dr. Sara Fuller reporter
  • Psychiatric/Mental Health – Dr. Kathy Scharer reporter
  • Management/Administration – Gloria Fowler reporter
  • Community/Public Health – Dr. Judy Alexander reporter
  • Geriatrics/Gerontological Health – Dr. Michelle Liken reporter

Following the reports presented by select faculty members of the College Advisory Committee joined the meeting. Those in attendance:

  • BJ Roof – Palmetto Baptist Hospital

  • Caroline Siegler – Palmetto Health Alliance

  • Faye Bible – Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital

  • Jac Upfield – SC Dept. of Mental Health

  • Dr. Shirley Timmons – SC Dept. of Recruitment and Retention

  • Versey Bellamy – College of Nursing Alumni President

  • Cheryl Hunter – Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital

  • Jana Lee – Midlands Technical College

Dialogue continued regarding the future of the BSN curriculum.  Dr. Opal Brown, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs shared her presentation: An Exploration of Creative Education – Clinical Partnerships and Models.

The meeting adjourned at 2:00pm.
