Interview with Amy Cockcroft
by Nursing Leadership Development Program Fellows
April 10, 2002, Brief Summary from Videotape

During the program sessions of 2002, Cockcroft Fellows held an interview with Amy Cockcroft. Questions and comments by Fellows focused on components of leadership in nursing. Amy Cockcroft graciously provided insights and discussed the following:

What enticed you to go into nursing?
Amy Cockcroft indicated that initially she wanted to be a private duty nurse and take care of patients. While she was in school she found she liked the operating room and after she graduated she worked there for a while. There have been many changes in operating room work over the years. Early nurses did tasks such as sharpening needles and mixing solutions.

Were you the first nurse in your family?
Yes.

Did you have a nursing license exam when you completed your program?
Yes. It involved demonstrating a skill as well as a written exam.

Amy V. Cockcroft
(former Dean, USC College of Nursing, from 1957 to 1969)

We are glad you brought ideas of nursing leadership to South Carolina. Can you tell more about this?
Surround yourself with good people and make it possible for them to stay. Create an environment in which they can operate at the level for which they are capable, and give them room to function as they know they can.

How would you go about making a point when communicating something important to others?
Be well prepared. Speak confidently. Draw on your experience.

What would you say is one of the biggest threats in nursing?
Nurses themselves if they don’t realize what they have, feel confidence, or participate fully in the community.

The Cockcroft Nursing Leadership content has promoted developing assurance in nursing leaders. Would you expand on this?
Be sure of what you have to say and speak up for your rights on a professional level.

What do you think nursing can do to move forward in the future?
First, the education of nurses has advanced gradually from the efforts of a number of nurse leaders. Eventually nursing came to have head nurses, then baccalaureate and masters programs where nurses could gain more knowledge. Then research became a focus in nursing. It is important to examine research topics and to keep advancing in this area. Second, there is a need to look carefully at decisions made for patients. They need to be patient centered. Third, there is a need for more people taking care of patients and with more education

Can you give us some final words of wisdom?
Do what you think is best and be happy about it. If you find that you are not satisfied, do something else.

Following interview questions, a group member thanked Amy Cockcroft for the positive influence she has had, and that this program has had. For many people, the program is a life changing experience. The skills obtained in the program give the nurses an opportunity to move into positions where they influence many people. That is a testimony and tribute to Amy Cockcroft and the leadership that she has done all of her years in professional nursing. She has given people chances and opportunities to do things that they could not have done had she not been there to mentor, provide encouragement, and provide a forum. Hopefully this positive program will continue to grow and to provide nurses the opportunities to influence policy, professional practice and the lives of patients in the long run.
