VIII. Part-time Faculty

A. Appointment
Part-time faculty appointment is offered to qualified individuals
with relevant education and experience. Appointment to the College is consistent
with the academic rank policies of the University described in the 2000
Faculty Manual.
1. Affirmative Action Policy
The University of South Carolina System provides equal opportunity

2. Hiring Process
Recruitment of part-time faculty is based on College and University
needs and availability of positions and funds. The process is:
a. Upon receipt of curriculum vitae, the information is given
to the Dean to review to see if certain criteria are met for positions
available. After review, the Dean requests the type of letter to be sent:
1. Interested (Further information is sent to applicant,
including information about USC and the College, and an interview date
is scheduled. References are requested at this time. A preliminary
telephone interview may be conducted to get additional information.)
2. Applicant is being considered for the position.
3. There is not a good match between the applicant’s abilities
and College needs.
Letters are sent within 72 hours of receipt of application by the Dean’s
office.
b. For those qualified, a personal interview is scheduled
with the Chair of the Faculty and Dean.
c. Once a decision is made, the Dean makes a verbal job offer to the
candidate. If the candidate accepts, the Dean sends a formal letter of
offer.
d. Letters are sent from the Dean to other candidates indicating position
has been filled.
3. Qualifications
Definition of Part-time Faculty: Members of the College of Nursing who
fill a temporary, specific need in the College. Part-time faculty are University
employees on fixed appointments and are not tenure track faculty.
Those appointed must emphasize commitment to nursing science and applying
theory to nursing practice through emphasis on theoretical thinking. Non-nurses
may be appointed.
4. Criteria for Appointment
A minimum of a

Master’s degree in a nursing specialty or appropriate discipline.

Membership in a professional organization.

Maintain a certification status if appropriate.

Demonstrates competence as an instructor.
5. Orientation
Orientation for new part-time faculty is planned by the Chair of the
Faculty prior to the beginning of classes. Other scheduled activities
will be included in the orientation calendar to provide new faculty with
an overview of the college and its programs. The Chair of the Faculty
may delegate some of these responsibilities to full time faculty members.
B. Part-time Faculty Workload
The mission of the University, the goals of the College of Nursing and
the clinical and part-time faculty guidelines provide the basis for faculty
responsibilities. Part-time faculty are expected to teach courses, mentor
students, participate in committee work, and be involved in community service
as specified in their letter of appointment.
Office Hours: Part-time faculty will post and hold a
minimum of 2 open hours per week; other office hours by appointment.
C. Evaluation
An evaluation is conducted annually by the Chair of the Faculty and
a copy is sent to the Dean. The information is then retained in the part-time
faculty’s personnel file.
D. Faculty Practice Plan
The College of Nursing participates in the School of Medicine Educational
Trust. Part-time faculty may be members of the Practice Plan.
