  Facts about Nursing Education

In South Carolina there are 22 Registered Nursing programs and 21 programs for Practical Nurses.  Registered nursing programs are located in Technical colleges and in universities.  Practical nursing programs are located in vocational schools (career center) and in Technical colleges.  Below is a link to all the RN and PN programs in South Carolina.  If you want to learn more about the admission requirements for entering a school, you can call the school and they will send you a brochure. Many schools of nursing have scholarships to help you become a nurse.  For more information on state and federal financial aid programs and other related web sites click here.

Preparing for a Nursing Career

There are some things that you can begin to do now to prepare you to become a nurse or go into a health career.  These are some courses that you can take while you are in middle and high school that will help you be successful in a nursing program:
 English
 Math (Algebra)
 Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics)
 Health Occupations
 Computer science
 Typing

Once you get in high school there are many ways that you can be assisted in meeting your career goals.  You may be eligible to go to a hospital and watch nurses working.  This will help you see if you like this kind of work.  You may also want to take part in some summer Institutes where you can sharpen your skills in math and science.  These Institutes are held by the SC AHEC Student Development and Diversity Council.
