Mary Ann Parsons Lectureship

Alpha Xi renamed this series of
programs the Mary Ann Parsons Lectureship, in honor of
Dr. Parsons who retired in 2005. She served as Dean of
the College of Nursing from 1988.
Informative programs are offered each year by Alpha Xi and emphasize
current important topics in nursing. Speakers with expert knowledge
present practical as well as conceptual information on the topic. Discussion
among attendees is encouraged. Through the program, credit hours are
provided.

The Mary Ann Parsons
Lectureship (formerly known as Viewpoints), was held on
February 9, 2007, at the Columbia Conference Center.
The conference theme was "The Missing Link: Connecting
Research and Practice." The speakers included: Anna
Alt-White, RN, PhD, who presented "Connecting Research
to Practice" and Dr. Iwana Ridgill,
Speaker & Humorist, who talked about "Different Strokes
for Different Folks." |

During the preceding evening, a
College
of Nursing 50th Anniversary Year
Reception was
held at McCutchen
House on the USC Campus.

2006 |
The Mary Ann Parsons Lectureship Conference was held
on February 24, 2006.
Alpha Xi, and Beta-Omicron Chapters of Sigma Theta Tau,
along with USC College
of Nursing presented the 2006 Mary Ann Parsons Lectureship,
“Nurses of the Future: Integrating Research, Practice,
Education and Leadership” at the Columbia Conference
Center. Morning and Afternoon concurrent sessions “AONE
Guiding Principles for the Future Patient Care Delivery
Models” were presented by Marilyn Bowcutt, President, AONE.
The afternoon Closing Session, “Times...They are a changin’…”
was presented by Dr. Iwana Ridgill, Speaker & Humorist.

Integrating Knowledge
into Practice and Research
February 25, 2005, 8:30 am-4:00 pm, at the
Columbiana Hotel & Conference Center, 2100 Bush
River Road, Columbia, SC.
The morning program included a presentation, Knowledge
Leadership in Nursing: Making the Invisible - Visible,
by Daniel J. Pesut, PhD, APRN, BC, FAAN, President,
Sigma Theta Tau International. In the afternoon, Lydia
Zager, MSN, RN, BC presented Courage in Leadership:
Transition to Action. A tribute to Mary Ann
Parsons, Dean, USC College of Nursing, was held. Both morning and afternoon
Concurrent Sessions were also held as well as Poster
Sessions. Health Issues for the
21st Century
February 27, 2004, 9:00 am-3:30 pm, at the North Trenholm Baptist Church, 6515
North Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC.
This program gave an overview of the Reach 2010 model, a
community driven participatory research project that is
aimed at health interventions. Reach 2010 is a national
program. South Carolina's program has been along the SC
coast between Charleston and Georgetown. The focus in
the presentation was on obesity and health problems
associated with obesity. Other related topics included
the role of exercise in health care, weight loss options
such as diets and bariatric surgery, and anti-obesity
pharmacology.
Bioterrorism Preparedness: South Carolina Nurses-Ready or Not?
February 21, 2003
The purpose of this one day seminar was to increase the participants'
knowledge regarding the nature of bioterrorism, how our nation and state
are preparing to protect our citizens, and the responsibility of nurses
across various practice settings to be prepared to respond to bioterrorism
events.
Violence - The Impact for Nurses
February 25, 2000
Viewpoints 2000 was dedicated to raising awareness and discussing issues
related to nurses and violence in the new millennium. Nurses are greatly
affected by violence in their personal, professional, societal and political
lives. Panelists generated discussion on how violence affects the nurse
and how nurses can affect violence. This workshop offered practical
ways violence prevention and treatment are offered in acute, community,
school, and academic healthcare settings. Nursing research related to
violence was highlighted. Discussion focused on management of violence
from many perspectives. A poster session provided participants an opportunity
to network with colleagues and review research and clinical projects.
Power through Partnerships
February 25, 1999
Viewpoints 1999 was dedicated to exploring the growing power of partnerships
to build and sustain healthy communities. Innovative and successful
partnership models were discussed. This workshop offered practical suggestions
on how to begin identifying community needs, involving key stakeholders,
and finding the funding sources to implement partnerships.
