Applicants must be current members of Sigma Theta Tau International,
Alpha Xi Chapter.
Applicants are to submit the original and four (5 total) copies
of the application.. The application contains the following sections:
(1) Biographical sketch/curriculum vita; (2) Abstract; (3) Proposal narrative;
(4) References; (5) Appendices; (6) Time frame for study; (7) Budget, and
(8)Agreement form. These sections are described below.
The application will be reviewed by a panel of doctorally prepared nurses
using an anonymous review process. To assist with the anonymous review
process, please submit an original and one copy (2 total copies) with the
applicant’s name, curriculum vitae, and signed agreement; the remaining
three copies should omit the applicant’s name, curriculum vitae, and signed
agreement
Award amounts may range from $500 to $1000. These awards are not
expected to cover all direct costs of a research project but rather to
lend some monetary support to the project. Alpha Xi Research Award
money should not be used to support indirect cost of research projects.
Awards are presented directly to recipients to be applied to direct budget
costs in whatever manner the recipient deems appropriate.
Accountability regarding the recipient’s use of the award is obtained
primarily through direct communication between the recipient and the Alpha
Xi Research Committee (see consent form in the guidelines) and through
commitments to present research findings to Alpha Xi members and publication
of abstract in Alpha Xi newsletter.
Recipients of the award will be notified prior to the general award
announcement at the chapter’s Annual Business Meeting on May 24, 2007. For

SECTIONS OF THE APPLICATION
Section 1: Current curriculum vitae
Section 2: Abstract of research proposal - Specify the research question(s)
and the subject population; and describe the research design, instruments,
and procedures. Briefly indicate the type of proposed data analysis
in the study. The abstract should not exceed 200 words.
Sections 3: Narrative - Body of the Proposal (10 page limit)
A. Purpose of the Study - State clearly the purpose of the study
including how the project makes a contribution to nursing.
B. Significance - Sketch the background of the proposal. Critically
evaluate existing knowledge. Specify the gaps that the project is
intended to fill. State concisely the importance of the research
in terms of the contribution to nursing and potential for leading to further
research methodology or theory development.
C. Specific Aims/Hypotheses - State concisely and realistically what
the research proposal is intended to accomplish and/or what hypothesis
(es) is (are) to be tested.
D. Theoretical/Conceptual Framework - Summarize the theoretical framework
or rationale as appropriate, addressing the relationships among the specific
aims, the literature, key concepts, variables and instruments.
E. Literature Review - Literature may be reviewed under a separate heading
within the narrative or as a separate part of the background, significance
and/or conceptual framework. Include a brief review of the literature
that is directly pertinent and assists in the clarification of the conceptual
framework, purpose, and the research question.
F. Methods - The methods should include the study design; sample and
setting; apparatus, tools and/or instruments; data collection procedures;
plan for data management; and limitations of the study. The
investigation must have appropriate approval before beginning data collection.
IRB approval is not required to apply for research monies.
Section 4: References - References should be current and in APA or other
recognizable format with complete biographical entries.
Section 5: Appendices - Appendices should be pertinent to the study.
If IRB approval has been obtained, it should be included here. Any
other documents that reflect support of the study may be included here.
Section 6: Time Frame - The time frame should indicate a realistic starting
and ending date. Critical components such as IRB approval, data collection,
and data analysis should be considered.
Section 7: Budget Estimate - The budget should indicate overall funding
requirements and reflect financial support being received from other sources.
Section 8: Agreement Form - The agreement form on the attached page
should be completed and submitted with the proposal.
