Research Grants are awarded by The
Center for Health Promotion and Risk Reduction in Special
Populations (HPSP). The funding level will be up to
$10,000 for a maximum of three awards annually.
Submission deadline is September 6 at 5:00 pm. The
purpose of the award is to assist individual investigators
to complete pilot work needed prior to submitting an
extramural research proposal. Persons who are currently
principal investigators on another federally funded grant
are not eligible for this award. An extramural proposal
should be ready for submission within 12 months following
the award. Proposal topics need to address the center
focus, and they must have an interdisciplinary team of
investigators.
The proposal should include:
1.
Specific Aims
2.
Background and Significance
3.
Preliminary Studies (if relevant)
4.
Research Design and Methods
5.
Analysis Plan
6.
Detailed Time Frame
7.
Target Date for Submission of Extramural Proposal
8.
Detailed budget and budget justification.
Budget may include supplies,
consultants, and salary for graduate assistants, and
transcription services. Summer salary (up to10%) for the PI
may be included. The application should not exceed 15
single spaced pages. Three copies of the
application and 1 copy of the investigator’s curriculum vita
must be submitted.
The HPSP Center Director will provide
consultation during development of the application. Review
criteria are available from the HPSP Center office, and
investigators are encouraged to review the criteria during
development of the proposal.
The HPSP Center Executive Committee and
other experienced research faculty review proposals. Two
reviewers will review each proposal. Recommendations for
funding are submitted to the HPSP Executive Committee who
makes the final decision.
A final report of the research is to be
submitted to the Center Director 12 months after the start
date or within 30 days of the grant closeout. The
investigator must also submit copies of all publications
resulting from the research to the HPSP office. The Center
should be acknowledged in any publication or presentation
resulting from the research.

Pilot Study
Budget Development
The Center staff is available
to assist faculty members in pilot study budget
development. In the planning stage, an appointment with the
Center Administrative Coordinator should be scheduled. The
following information must be provided:

Personnel - List all personnel, including
names, percent of effort and roles on the project.

Travel - Costs should be reasonable, necessary, and
based on university rates.

In-state subsistence allowance: $20/day; out-of-state:
$32/day
-
Travel, airfare is
based on a quote or on reliable specific knowledge of
actual airfare costs
-
Travel, mileage.
Actual numbers of trips are estimated and mileage is
based on 30.5 cents per mile.

Travel, miscellaneous
expenses should be estimated (parking, taxi, etc.).
-
Supplies necessary for the conduct of the project
should be budgeted.
-
Contractual expenses include any contract for services
you expect to get if the proposal is funded.
Remember, total costs of the
project cannot exceed $10,000. Once the budget has been
finalized, the College of Nursing Business manager’s
approval must be obtained.
Budget Justification
The purpose of the budget justification is
to explain the expenses in your budget. Be as detailed as
possible, particularly in estimating the time you will need
of project staff that will be doing critical tasks such as
collecting data and delivering interventions. Use extra
caution not to underestimate the budget.
