Research Grants are awarded by The Center for Health Promotion and Risk Reduction in Special Populations (HPSP).  The funding level will be up to $10,000 for a maximum of three awards annually.  Submission deadline is September 6 at 5:00 pm.  The purpose of the award is to assist individual investigators to complete pilot work needed prior to submitting an extramural research proposal. Persons who are currently principal investigators on another federally funded grant are not eligible for this award.  An extramural proposal should be ready for submission within 12 months following the award.  Proposal topics need to address the center focus, and they must have an interdisciplinary team of investigators.

The proposal should include:

1.            Specific Aims

2.                  Background and Significance

3.                  Preliminary Studies (if relevant)

4.                  Research Design and Methods

5.                  Analysis Plan

6.                  Detailed Time Frame

7.                  Target Date for Submission of Extramural Proposal

8.                  Detailed budget and budget justification.

Budget may include supplies, consultants, and salary for graduate assistants, and transcription services. Summer salary  (up to10%) for the PI may be included.  The application should not exceed 15 single spaced pages.  Three copies of the application and 1 copy of the investigator’s curriculum vita must be submitted.

The HPSP Center Director will provide consultation during development of the application.  Review criteria are available from the HPSP Center office, and investigators are encouraged to review the criteria during development of the proposal.

The HPSP Center Executive Committee and other experienced research faculty review proposals. Two reviewers will review each proposal. Recommendations for funding are submitted to the HPSP Executive Committee who makes the final decision.

A final report of the research is to be submitted to the Center Director 12 months after the start date or within 30 days of the grant closeout.  The investigator must also submit copies of all publications resulting from the research to the HPSP office.  The Center should be acknowledged in any publication or presentation resulting from the research.
