What is the Program Length?
Master of Science in Nursing  - 36-48 credits, full-time 2 years; part-time 3-6 years

Master of Science in Nursing/ Master of Public Health  - 51-54 credits, full-time 2 years; part-time 3-6 years

Post-Master's - 24-30 credits part-time 1-4 years

PhD - 3-4 years of full time study; part time varies; must be completed in 8 years.

DNP - 2-5 years full-time study - depends on previous educational preparation; part-time varies; must be completed in 8 years.

What are the Admission Requirements for the Graduate Program?

Master's   
The admission process attempts to identify individuals who have a high probability of successfully completing the MSN program.  All factors are considered in combination.  Specific requirements include

1.      A bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree from a program that is nationally accredited

2.      Transcripts of all previous college studies (average undergraduate GPA for recently admitted students was greater than 3.20; average nursing GPA was greater than 3.30).

3.      General GRE verbal and quantitative scores or MAT score (average GRE scores for recently admitted students were greater than 450 [verbal] and 525 (quantitative]; average MAT score was greater than 45.)

4.      Registered nurse licensure in South Carolina or eligibility for S.C. licensure

5.      Completed application to the Graduate School with the College of Nursing supplement (both are available online

6.      Two references written by master’s or doctorally prepared nurses who are qualified to evaluate nursing practice performance and academic potential.

The admission requirements for the post-master’s Certificate programs are the same except that GRE or MAT are not required.   


Doctoral Program (PhD)  
The admission process attempts to identify individuals who have a high probability of successfully completing the program. All factors are considered in combination. Specific requirements include:

1. one of the following options:

a. B.S.N. entry option--a bachelor of science in nursing degree from a program that is nationally accredited;

b. M.S.N. entry option--a bachelor of science in nursing degree and a master's in nursing degree from nationally accredited programs;

c. non-M.S.N. master's entry option--a bachelor of science in nursing degree from a nationally accredited program and a master's degree in another discipline.

2. general GRE verbal and quantitative scores (The average GRE scores of recently admitted students were greater than 520 [verbal] and 540 [quantitative].);
3. transcripts of all previous college studies (The average GPA of recently admitted students was greater than 3.80.);
4. registered nurse licensure in South Carolina or eligibility for S.C. licensure;
5. completed application to The Graduate School with the College of Nursing supplement;
6. potential for scholarship in nursing science as evidenced by the following:

a. two or three examples of scholarly work, e.g., research reports, published articles, thesis, course papers, and written innovations;

b. written statement of career goals;

c. three letters of reference from doctorally prepared nurses that address research and scholarship potential;

d. interview with two nursing graduate faculty members.  


Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)   
Admission requirements vary somewhat for each admission entry point but there are common requirements across the three.  These are summarized in the following table.

What about Non-Degree Status Special Student?
Non-degree status admission is available for qualified students desiring to enroll in specific courses and who are not seeking a degree or certificate. Applications accepted on an individual basis.
Deadlines:
Fall Admission - July 1
Spring Admission - November 15
Summer Admission - May 1

You may request a College of Nursing non-degree status application from the Office of Student Services by calling 777-3754.

 

What about Credentialing?
(Application) Mail or drop off application to the attention of Cheryl Nelson-Jackson in OSS with a forwarding address or self-addressed, stamped envelope. The form will be completed upon receipt and returned to address provided. Transcripts may be requested from the Registrar's Office, 777-5555.
 

(Correspondence) Letters for graduates are prepared (when applicable) with application. Letters for students completing at a later date are prepared upon graduation.

 

What Health Information Documentation is needed?
Must be complete to be released to register for classes.

Submit documentation for the following:

1. Positive titers for Rubella, Rubeola, and Chickenpox, and completion of Hepatitis (HBV) immunization series or titer. Two step PPD prior to first clinical course. PPD screening every 12 months.  Tetanus/Diptheria immunization within last 10 years.

2. RN Licensure

3. CPR certification for the health care professional.

4. Universal Precautions Test - 100% passed

Check dates for items expiring or already expired before the semester ends.

    Fall (August 1 - December 31)
    Spring (January 1 - May 15)
    Summer (May 16 - August 1)
If any health information expires during the next semester, you will be ineligible to register for that semester.
Graduation
Do I need to apply for graduation?
1. Yes
2. Applications are available in Office of Student Services (Room 141) and the Office of Academic Affairs (Room 211).
3. Undergraduate students - turn in to Office of Student Services, Room 140.
4. Graduate students:  Master's and Post Master's, DNP Students, and  PhD Students - turn in to Cheryl Nelson-Jackson, Office of Student Services, Room 141.
