Welcome!
The College of
Nursing, Information Resource Center (IRC) is located in room 306. The IRC is
available to all nursing students, faculty, and staff. The IRC encompasses the
computer, videotape viewing, and client-simulated laboratories. There are
currently 18 PCs available with Microsoft Windows and the MS Office suite of
products installed as well as Internet access. There are a variety of
computer-assisted nursing programs, hundreds of videos, and some instructional
CDs for commonly used software programs. The IRC offers many services to
students that include black and white laser printing, color inkjet printing,
color copies, laminating, and faxing. Check our newsletter, web site or
bulletin board for prices regarding these services. We have a variety of health
assessment, audiovisual and computer equipment available for checkout including
otoscopes, laptops, blood pressure cuffs and more. There is no fee to check
these items out unless they are returned late or damaged. Please ask for
details in the IRC on how to check these items out. Course-required videotapes
are located at the helpdesk in the IRC. These videos must be viewed in the
viewing lab only and your USC ID is required.
The
Client-Simulated Lab (CSL) is a clinical instruction and practice area for
students. Students must be accompanied by an Instructor or an assigned Graduate
Assistant to enter the CSL. There is a coin-operated copier located in room 306
for nursing students. We also have a graphics workstation equipped with a
scanner, photo editing software, color inkjet printer and a zip drive for the
production of presentations and/or posters. The IRC does not offer formal
classes on software, however, the staff and student assistants are available to
help with questions you may have regarding the use the Microsoft software
located on the lab machines. Programs specific to courses may require
instructor assistance. The IRC operating hours vary according to semester class
offerings with the intent of meeting the needs of the majority of students.
There will be some dates the IRC will be closed for testing or for reservations
made by an Instructor for class meetings. These closings will be posted on the
door of the IRC and on NTV. Routinely the IRC is open 8:00-4:30, when no
classes are scheduled.
We have been hard
at work making changes that we hope will make things easier for you. We have
added an additional projection machine to our inventory which would give us
sufficient supply to meet the needs of all Nursing Faculty. We are in the
process of adding five new laptops for students which should alleviate the need
for a waiting list thanks to the generous donations within the College, we have
added a color laser printer and an industrial laminator to the list of resources
available in the IRC. You will find details in this newsletter regarding the
capabilities of this workstation. The Educational Resource and Technology
Committee purchased a variety of updated videos to enhance the concepts taught
in the CON, as well as many new items in the Client Simulated Lab. We have
updated some of the software available and we have made many new applications
available from home via the
Citrix system.
As some of you
may have noticed, we have new computers in the lab. These new machines should
make working in the lab quicker as they are all Pentium 4's. Please take a
minute to review this webpage and become familiar with our staff and services.
Thank you and have a great semester.
