    The College of Nursing offers:
  • a four-year undergraduate program on the Columbia campus leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • a program that is approved by the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina and for provisional accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

  • Curriculum

  • The college's curriculum combines professional education in nursing with a strong foundation in the liberal arts. General education courses include English, mathematics, chemistry, biology, psychology, and sociology as well as nursing courses and electives.
  • In the freshman and sophomore years, introductory nursing courses focus on health and wellness, communication in nursing, and the history of the nursing profession.
  • During the final two years, upper division nursing students concentrate on clinical and advanced nursing courses.
  • Clinical practice is supported by concurrent classroom study. Students have opportunities for many learning experiences and practice in a variety of settings such as hospitals, health-care and extended-care facilities, nursing homes, clinics, private homes, schools, and community agencies.
  • The nursing program is completed with 128 credit hours.

  • Entrance and Progression

  • To be admitted into the College of Nursing, you must meet all University admission (800-868-5872) requirements. Further requirements may be imposed for admission to the degree program.
  • To progress through the nursing curriculum, you must successfully complete all prerequisite general education and nursing courses and maintain a minimum yearly, and cumulative 2.75 grade point average (GPA) in all USC courses. A minimum grade of C is required in each nursing course. You must apply to enter the upper division. Entrance into the upper division is competitive and is not guaranteed.
  • Careers in Nursing
