Faculty & Staff Resources

A variety of resources are below to aid in your support of students applying for national fellowships.

Faculty and Staff Volunteer Form

Faculty and Staff Volunteers are at the heart of national fellowship advising at USC. We encourage you to share your time and expertise with a national fellowship applicants or a Top Scholar by completing this volunteer form.

National Association of Fellowships Advisors (NAFA)

The National Association of Fellowships Advisors (NAFA) is a professional organization comprised of individuals engaged in the practice of advising college and university students who apply for competitive scholarships and fellowships; institutions of higher education that promote and celebrate the process of applying for competitive scholarships and fellowships as an educational enterprise; and foundations and organizations that administer competitive scholarship and fellowship programs.

The University of South Carolina is a proud member of NAFA and subscribes to the Core Values as noted in the NAFA Code of Ethics. Please review the following information on the NAFA Mission and Code of Ethics.

Referring Great Students to OFSP

We have found a referral approach that seems to work well to encourage students to engage in the national fellowship process. It's simple! Email OFSP@sc.edu and copy the student you are referring on that very email. Include a brief message to us (no need to have a specific fellowship in mind) and we will respond back to both you and the student ASAP.

By copying the student on your email to OFSP it draws them into the exchange from the beginning and most students actually following up and meet with an advisor.

Questions? Please let us know. We welcome and encourage referrals at any time!

Information for Letter Writers

Letters of Recommendation are a critical piece of any national fellowship applications. Advisors in OFSP are available to help writers craft letters that reflect the criteria noted by each competition. Email OFSP@sc.edu for assistance in addition to these on-line resources below.

A helpful general resource on writing recommendation letters for students can be found here.

For advice on what specific national fellowships are seeking in their letters, with particular attention given to the Fulbright, Gates Cambridge, Goldwater, Marshall, Mitchell, NSF, Rhodes, Truman, and Udall, you may go directly to this page.
