APPENDIX A - Some Publications of Interest to Students in Pre-Medicine

1. MEDICAL SCHOOL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS. (MSAR) Published annually (in April) by AAMC. This book contains the latest available information on selection factors and the credentials of admitted students for each medical school in the US and Canada. The latest edition should be consulted by every student during the time the decision is being made as to where to apply. Available for purchase at the University Bookstore or it may be ordered from AAMC (an order form is enclosed in the MCAT Registration packet). Available for use in Pre-Professional Advising, 208 Sumwalt College.

2. MEDICAL PROFESSIONS ADMISSIONS GUIDE: STRATEGY FOR SUCCESS. A Handbook for pre-health Students (1994). An informative book written by a team of experienced advisors and published by NAAHP, Inc., PO Box 5018, Champaign, IL 61824-1518.

3. WRITE FOR SUCCESS: Preparing a Professional School Application. A booklet by Evelyn Jackson and Harold Bardo, both at the School of Medicine, Southern Illinois University, written specifically to help medical school applicants present themselves in the best possible light. Published by NAAHP, Inc., PO Box 5018, Champaign, IL 61824.

4. THE MEDICAL SCHOOL INTERVIEW. A booklet written by Randall Zielinski, MD, that prepares students for a medical school interview. Published by NAAHP, Inc., PO Box 5018, Champaign, IL 61824.

5. PLAN FOR SUCCESS: An Organizing Guide for Pre-Health Professions Students. Written by Charles E. Kozoll, a time management expert from the University of Illinois. Published by NAAHP, Inc., PO Box 5018, Station A, Champaign, IL 61824.

6. THE MCAT STUDENT MANUAL. Published by AAMC, this manual contains a detailed description of the Medical College Admissions Test with topic outlines and a full length practice test. Available at the University Bookstore.

7. FINANCIAL PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT MANUAL FOR US MEDICAL STUDENTS. Published by AAMC (an order form is enclosed in the MCAT Registration packet).

8. THE NEW PHYSICIAN. A magazine published by the American Medical Student Association, 1910 Association Drive, Reston, VA 22091. Membership for pre-medical students in AMSA includes a subscription to THE NEW PHYSICIAN, which is a good source of information about trends in medical education, financial aid, starting a medical practice and other timely topics.
