Where does the directory information come from?
- Student Information
-
The student information listed in the directory is built
directly from the University Registrar's database of students
who are currently enrolled. This information is updated
once a week. The only information that does
not come from the Registrar's database is the student's email
address and alias. It is the responsiblity of the student to
register and maintain their current email address.
- Faculty & Staff Information
-
The faculty and staff information listed in the directory
is built directly from the University Human Resources
database of current University employees. This
information is updated nightly Monday through Friday. The
only information that does not come from the Human
Resources' database is the faculty/staff member's email
address and alias. It is the responsiblity of the
faculty/staff member to register and maintain their
current email address.

Searching the Directory
-
- Why can't I find somebody I know that is at the University of South Carolina?
-
A person's first name as registered in the
University databases may be different than their
common name. So try this:
- Search for just their last name
Ex: smith
- If that returns an error of too many matches then
use the first letter of the first name and the "*"
wildcard.
Ex: r* smith
- If this does not return the desired results,
try the Advanced
Search and enter additional information such
as the person's department, major, etc.
In addition, students may request that their information
be supressed from the online directory.
-
What is somebody's email address, I know they have one?
-
Students, Faculty, and Staff are responsible for registering
and maintaining their own e-mail addresses. Because many
people have multiple e-mail address (central servers, college
or departmenal servers, Internet Service Provider, etc.), we
cannot attempt to guess their correct address. Therefore,
some people may have an e-mail address even if the directory
search indicates that they do not have an e-mail address.
Some possible solutions to find a person's e-mail address:
- Contact the person via traditional methods
(postal mail, telephone).
- Try a internet e-mail search to see if the person has
registered their e-mail address elsewhere.
(Ex: Yahoo! People Search)
- Go to USC's Home Page
(http://www.sc.edu) or search USCMap for to find the
Web page for the person's department. These pages usually
have contact information (phone numbers, e-mail addresses,
etc.) that are a good starting point for finding a person's
e-mail address.
If you are successful is getting in touch with the person that
you are searching for, please encourage them to visit the Online
Directory (http://mel.csd.sc.edu/phonebook)
and register their e-mail address.
- What is the phone number for a department?
-
Departments are not currently stored in the Online directory.
To locate information about departments please use the main
University of South Carolina Home
Page or USCMap
which contain various departmental information such as phone
numbers, web page addresses, e-mail addresses, etc.
-
Why can't I get more than 20 matches?
-
In order to prevent the Online Directory from being used to
generate large e-mail or phone list for marketing purposes the
University has decided to limit the number of matches a single
search may generate to 20. By using
wildcards and/or the
Advanced Search users should be able to refine their
search to indentify individuals at the University of South
Carolina.
