 I. Policy

Although University faculty engage in research year round,

faculty generally receive salary support from sponsoring agencies

for research conducted during the summer only. Because the

potential to receive salary support during the academic year

seems substantial, the University has established the Salary

Grant Relief Incentive Plan to increase the level of academic

year sponsored research. The Salary Grant Relief Incentive Plan

permits relief dollars generated during the academic year to be

returned to the operating budget of the program of origin.

A. Salary grant relief is defined as that portion of an

"A"-funded salary which is paid from a grant or contract.

B. Salaries for both unclassified and classified personnel on

State funds may qualify for salary grant relief.

C. Salary grant relief includes only the salaries but not the

fringe benefits associated with those salaries.

D. Salary grant relief will be one-time additions to a

program's operating budget for a fiscal year.

II. Procedure

A. The head of an academic program may claim salary grant

relief when grant or contract funds are substituted for

"A"-funded salaries during an individual's normal base period (9,

10.5, 11, or 12 month base).

B. Program heads are given maximum flexibility in using salary

grant relief funds; however, all uses must be in accordance with

standard University policies for the expenditure of funds.
