The African American Professors Program
South East Alliance for Graduate Education & the Professoriate

A Message From The Director

John McFadden, Ph.D.The new decade brings myriad challenges and opportunities for the African American Professors Program - AAPP. Education is a national concern, and increasing the number of African American professors is a critical objective. To advance this mission, we are proud to have the support of the South Carolina General Assembly, the University of South Carolina, and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation to assist these graduate students as they matriculate in various doctoral programs at the University.

The African American Professors Program was created in 1997 under the leadership of Drs. Aretha B. Pigford and Leonard O. Pellicer. Our students are intellectually astute and will have an impact on the world in a positive and enduring manner. As present and future leaders, these scholars bring a wealth of experience and diversity to the program. Through scholarship and professional development, our goal is to be the pillar that provides a foundation for an outstanding career for each of them.

As director of the program, I am committed to the University's goal of developing and inspiring the minds of African American scholars. All of these doctoral students were selected based on their former record of excellence and their commitment to continued excellence in their fields of graduate study.

I am grateful to each of the scholars, staff members, and colleagues for accepting my leadership and the challenges that it brings. I envision a transforming global experience as our students set forth to expand the body of knowledge while interfacing with outstanding professionals, eminent leaders, and policymakers.
