H. Richard (Rich) Milner, IV (also known as Rich) is an Associate Professor of Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Milner also holds a secondary appointment as Associate Professor of Education in the Department of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations at Vanderbilt University. In 2007, Dr. Milner became the first African American in Peabody College’s history to earn tenure and promotion. He earned the Doctor of Philosophy degree and Master of Arts degree in educational policy and leadership from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He also earned the Master of Arts degree in teaching and the Bachelor of Arts degree in English from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
Dr. Milner has published more than seventy (70) journal articles and book chapters, and he has published five books. His work has appeared in several leading journals including Educational Researcher, The Urban Review, Race, Ethnicity, and Education, Journal of Negro Education, Journal of Teacher Education, Journal of Public Management and Social Policy, Review of Research in Education, Urban Education, Journal of Black Studies, Teaching and Teacher Education, Curriculum Inquiry, and the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education. His most recent book, published in 2010 by Harvard Education Press, is: Start where you are but don’t stay there: Understanding diversity, opportunity gaps, and teaching in today’s classrooms. At present, the book has sold more than 7,000 copies.
Dr. Milner’s research has been recognized with the Carl A Grant Multicultural Research Award (2010) from the National Association for Multicultural Education, an Early Career Award (2006) of the American Educational Research Association and a Vanderbilt University Affirmative Action and Diversity Initiative Certificate (2005). In addition, Professor Milner has been honored with an Ohio State University Distinguished Alumnus Award (2012), one of the highest honors bestowed upon a graduate. Professor Milner is also the Editor-in-chief of the journal, Urban Education, a leading journal in the field. He assumed the role of editor of the journal in January 2012 and will serve in this role over the next five (5) years.
