Dr. Helen I. Doerpinghaus
Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies
Dr. Helen Doerpinghaus is the Vice Provost
and the Dean of Undergraduate Studies. She is responsible for
the development and approval process for academic programs and
courses. She is also responsible for the accreditation of the
University by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools,
and compliance with rules and regulations established by the
South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. Other
responsibilities include oversight of the Office of
Institutional Assessment and Compliance, as well as the
University of South Carolina Press. She oversees review of the
undergraduate general education requirements, the First-Year
Reading Experience, and provides guidance on undergraduate
academic initiatives within- and beyond-the-classroom.
Dr. Doerpinghaus received her B.A. in English and History from
Macalester College and her M.A. and Ph.D. in applied economics
at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1987
she joined the Finance faculty at USC's Moore School of
Business. Her teaching and research interests are in the areas
of risk management, insurance, and health and retirement
economics. Dr. Doerpinghaus received the Michael J. Mungo Award
for teaching excellence, and she has published numerous
scholarly articles and co-authored a textbook. She serves on the
editorial board of the Journal of Risk and Insurance
and is a past president of the American Risk and Insurance
Association.
