Leadership Highlights Opportunities for Leadership Development 2011-2012 Leadership Highlights Leadership: Making a Difference for the Public Good By Director Kevin Elliott From January 16 to February 7, USC is holding its 2012 Leadership Summit, a series of events focused on leadership, service, and civic engagement. USC's Capstone Scholars Program is offering a unique UNIV290L course on leadership during Spring 2012. Students will have the opportunity to learn about leadership concepts and to shadow leaders at the university and in the Columbia community. More than twelve students, faculty, and staff members from USC are participating in the Liberty Fellowship Summit 2011 to explore ways to lead the state of South Carolina toward better education, healthcare, economic development, and environmental health. Five students from USC will be attending the South Carolina Leadership Forum on Faith and Values in January 2012. USC's Office of Leadership Programs is offering a number of exciting opportunities during Spring 2012. These include a one-day leadership program offered by LeaderShape on January 21, a six-week certificate program called LEAP, and the annual Student Leadership and Diversity Conference in February. The Carolina Leadership Initiative is pleased to announce the 2011-2012 Duke Executives in Residence Series, which will focus on the theme of Leadership in Sustainability. Leadership Opportunities The University of South Carolina provides a very wide range of programs and opportunities for developing leadership skills, including undergraduate research programs, study abroad opportunities, coursework, service projects, and student organizations. *Are You Leadership Ready in the Classroom?* USC offers a number of curricular opportunities for developing knowledge and skills related to leadership. We are currently exploring the creation of a minor in Leadership Studies and performing an inventory of our many courses related to leadership. We have compiled a list of university websites that provide information about many of our curricular offerings. *Are You Leadership Ready for Student Governance and Activities?* The Division of Student Affairs provides a host of opportunities for leadership development, including the Student Leadership and Diversity Conference (SLDC), the Leadership Enrichment and Development (LEAD) retreat, the Leadership Resource Center and library, the USC Service Leadership Institute, the Emerging Leaders certification program (ELP), and numerous recognition programs for outstanding student leadership. See the Student Affairs Leadership Programs website for more information. *Are You Leadership Ready for Research?* The Office of Undergraduate Research helps students to develop excellence in research through a variety of programs, including the Magellan Scholars program, Discovery Day, the Discover program, and a number of other programs. *Are You Leadership Ready for Community Service?* USC’s Community Service Programs and our service-learning courses provide numerous occasions for developing leadership through community engagement. *Are You Leadership Ready for International Activities?* USC’s International Programs office facilitates study-abroad programs and other opportunities for students and faculty to gain leadership skills through cross-cultural collaboration. *Are You Leadership Ready for Exploring Careers?* Colleges and departments across the university offer numerous internship opportunities (including the Washington Semester and SC State Semester programs) that facilitate the development of leadership skills while enabling students to explore particular career paths. For example, we encourage you to examine these sites that discuss internships programs facilitated by the Career Center, the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sports Management, the Honors College, the Moore School of Business, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and the School of the Environment. *Are You Leadership Ready for Living and Learning with Your Classmates?* USC has a number of dynamic living and learning programs that promote leadership skills among students. Our goals are three-fold: to promote a vision for leadership development on the USC campus; to serve as a focal point and clearinghouse for information about leadership opportunities; and to catalyze the creation of new projects on campus related to leadership. All our activities are designed to help students develop the motivation and the skills to make a positive difference in their local communities, throughout the state of South Carolina, and around our nation and world. Wherever you want to pursue leadership development - in coursework, student governance, undergraduate research, internships, or international experiences - USC has opportunities for you.
