Architect & Engineering Firms Selected for USC
Research Campus - 19 Area Businesses Awarded Contracts
to Design First Phase
The University of South Carolina has announced five principal
architect and engineering firms chosen to design phase one of the
university's 200-acre Innovista. Of the firms selected, three are from
the Columbia area. The companies include:
- The Boudreaux Group of Columbia, SC, selected to design the
Horizon Block's parking deck;
- The LPA Group of Columbia, SC, selected to design the Biomedical
Block's parking deck;
- Watson Tate Savory Architects, Inc., of Columbia, SC, selected
to design the Horizon Center's research building;
- Jenkins Peer Architects of Charlotte, NC, selected to design the
Biomedical Block's research building; and,
- Little Diversified Architectural Consulting of Charlotte, NC,
selected to design the Public Health Block's research building.
Each of the five firms will work with their own team of
sub-consultants to design each project such that all should be
completed by mid 2007. All five will also work in concert with the
university's master planner, Sasaki Associates, Boston, to ensure the
five structures meet pre-established guidelines and criteria for the
Innovista.
Upon making the announcement, USC President Dr. Andrew Sorensen, said,
We are pleased to have had such a large number of responses. These are
truly world class companies and the fact that we had such a range of
firms to submit, many of whom are from central South Carolina,
exceeded even our own expectations.
Dr. Harris Pastides, Vice President for Research and the Division of
Health Sciences, added, From the outset, we have committed to
identifying the best ideas and approaches with which to create a
quality, livable campus for researchers and students alike. The look
and feel of the buildings should be no different. We are confident
that this process will yield designs that will be a long-lasting
testament to the vision of the USC Innovista.
Rick Kelly, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and President
of the USC Innovista Foundation, said, This is only the first step in
the selection process for phase one of the Innovista. The next step
will be the selection of the construction manager-at-risk firms which
will oversee the construction of all projects.
In addition to the five principal firms, some 40 sub-consultants were
also selected to participate in the designing and planning of the
Innovista infrastructure and support facilities. Almost half of these
companies were from the Midlands.
