Like her fellow RFB&D members, high school junior Brantley Barfield can often be found using RFB&D audiobooks and players as part of her everyday routine in school and at home. However, Brantley, who has cerebral palsy and is legally blind, uses her feet and toes to navigate through her audiobooks.
“Many people assume if someone is physically disabled they’re mentally challenged as well," says the Columbia, SC, resident. "This is a huge mistake. Many disabled people have a lot to offer. We just require some help."
Brantley uses the Victor Reader Classic+ because of its ability to play the words at a higher speed. According to Brantley’s teacher, Judy Moedinger, “The Victor Reader Classic+ makes a significant difference for students because it enables them to access material at a faster rate. It greatly facilitates the student’s ability to prepare for class and allows them to get through material much more efficiently.” It was at a conference that Moedinger met RFB&D South Carolina State Outreach Director Carolyn Donges and came up with the idea to introduce Brantley to the Victor Reader Classic+.
Brantley's school ordered California Blue, the book she was reading in class, and clocked her at a listening speed of 350 words per minute. The team put the player in reach of Brantley’s feet and she was able to push the buttons simply by using her toes.
“She was elated because now she could be an independent reader,” says Donges. "When I saw the look on her face when she realized she could operate the Victor Reader Classic+ with her toes and it would read fast enough, I knew this is what it’s all about. This is what RFB&D is here for.”
Brantley attends regular education classes in school and helps out in a classroom for students with profound mental disabilities by setting an example, encouraging them and being a good friend. Upon graduation, she plans to pursue a college degree in journalism.
