FAQS: LISTSERV
Q. What is a LISTSERV?
A LISTSERV allows anyone with an email address and a basic
understanding of email principles to manage an electronic discussion
forum for either USC use (to support a local student organization,
an administrative committee or to distribute departmental faculty
announcements, class discussion and instruction, etc.) or for the
Internet community as a whole (for example, maybe you want to create
a discussion list on 18th century French poets or a mailing list for
an international conference your department is hosting). If you are
interested in starting a LISTSERV list, refer to Academic Services
LISTSERV List Request/Support
website.
Also, the
LISTSERV handout provides information for LISTSERV mailing list
participants, and includes a list of USC IT and public
information-related lists. USC's LISTSERV server also includes
a web interface for listowners and subscribers and is available at
http://listserv.sc.edu.
Contact Academic Services, 777-6015, or email
LISTMGR@VM.SC.EDU if you have
LISTSERV questions or problems.

Q. How do I subscribe to a
LISTSERV?
You can subscribe to a USC class LISTSERV list by emailing
LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SC.EDU and entering in
the body of the message the command SUB listname yourfirstname
yourlastname. Substitute the list name for listname, your first name for
yourfirstname and your last name for yourlastname. You'll be emailed a
confirmation.

Q. How do I send email to a
LISTSERV?
To send mail to the list of subscribers on a LISTERV just email
listname@LISTSERV.SC.EDU.
Substitute the list name for listname. You can
also access a handout on LISTSERV use on the web:
