    Q. What does the USC mainframe computer provide?

University Technology Services IBM Enterprise server (the mainframe) hosts several University systems (listed below). A 3270 Telnet client is required to access these systems (see details below). The MVS system (mvs.sc.edu) hosts USCAN, IMS, and TSO, and also provides auxiliary storage for datasets associated with University mainframe accounts. The VM/CMS system (vm.sc.edu) hosts the CMS text editing and batch job submission system.

IMS – the IBM Information Management System devoted to administrative applications and University databases.

TSO – the IBM Time Sharing Option system, restricted to University Technology Services internal applications and programming.

VM/CMS – the IBM Virtual Machine/Conversational Monitoring System provides a text editor and batch job submission system for University faculty, staff, and students to access programming languages and data stored on the MVS host.

    Q. How do I access the mainframe?

IMS, TSO, and VM/CMS access is controlled by mainframe userid/password access. Information on applying for a mainframe userid is available at http://uts.sc.edu/ars/handouts/CMSIMS.shtml.  For more technical information on these systems, refer to the Mainframe Handouts website at http://uts.sc.edu/ars/handouts.shtml.  To download a 3270 Telnet client to access these systems, go to the University Technology Services Software Distribution website, http://www.sc.edu/software, and follow the link to Internet Tools (download Host Explorer for Windows or Brown Tn3270 for Macs).

    Q. I have an Internet Service Provider (such as AOL). How do I access my mainframe account over the Internet?

Mainframe systems are accessible from the Internet; a 3270 emulation of telnet is available for both Mac and Windows systems via download locally. Please note that in setting configuration files to access these applications, it is always preferable to use the alphabetic hostname rather than the 129.252 form of address. The CMS hostname is vm.sc.edu.
The MVS hostname is mvs.sc.edu.  Please refer to the mainframe handouts menu for more information on Internet access to these systems.
