Scholarships

The Department of Biological Sciences offers Awards and Scholarships for undergraduate students each year.  A request for applications goes out early in the Spring semester and winners are notified by the end of the academic term.  

Department of Biological Sciences Scholarships and Support

Recipients of these awards are selected by the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

  • JAMES T. PENNEY AWARD Awarded to an undergraduate Student Athlete who has demonstrated academic excellence while majoring in the field of Biological Sciences. Student must have earned 60 hours by the end of the Spring semester. Recipient receives $100.
  • OUTSTANDING BIOLOGY SENIOR AWARD Awarded to the graduating senior in Biology who has excelled in academic performance and in undergraduate research and service. Recipient receives $500 Savings Bond.

University-wide Scholarships and Support

Contact Mrs. Avette Brown at avette@mailbox.sc.edu for more information. Applications are never mailed through the postal service or sent through email. In order to apply for a departmental award, qualifying students must have completed a certain number of hours in the biology major on the USC-Columbia and/or satellite campuses. Check your gamecock email for application notices and guidelines.

  • JUNE TRAPP SWANSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN BOTANY
    Awarded to worthy undergraduates with strong interest in and propensity for study of botany.
  • JENNY ZARECK SCHAYER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
    Awarded to a biology pre-med student has demonstrated academic excellence in Biological Sciences. Student must have completed at least 90 hours by the end of the Spring semester.
  • T. L. McMEEKIN SCHOLARSHIP
    Awarded to a non-pre-med undergraduate student who has demonstrated academic excellence in Biological Sciences. Preference will be given to a student who may not have received proper recognition for superior work.
  • A. C. MOORE SCHOLARSHIP
    Awarded to a non-pre-med undergraduate student who has completed 60 hours and who has demonstrated a superior aptitude for biology. The student should show promise and potential for a post-baccalaureate education.
  • GEORGE W. WARING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
    Awarded to an undergraduate biology pre-med student who has demonstrated academic excellence in Biological Sciences. Student must have completed 60 hours by the end of Spring.
  • W. GORDON BELSER SCHOLARSHIP
    Awarded to an undergraduate Biology major who has demonstrated academic excellence in botany courses. Student must have completed 60 hours by the end of the Spring semester.
  • FELIX H. LAUTER SCHOLARSHIP
    Awarded to an undergraduate Biology major who has demonstrated academic excellence, and who has a pre-professional interest in Health Professions. Students must not have completed more than 36 hours by the end of the Spring semester.
