Undergraduate Scholarships & Awards

The School of the Earth, Ocean and Environment offers scholarships specific to academic majors housed within the school. You may apply for all SEOE scholarships using a single application unless otherwise noted.

Pastides Sustainability Award

Former USC President Harris Pastides and Patricia Moore-Pastides are committed to sustainability and its positive impact on multiple systems. This award recognizes an undergraduate student that has truly impacted Sustainability at USC.  Students who are Juniors and who will have completed 90 credit hours by the end of the Spring semester in which the award is made (i.e. rising seniors) shall be eligible to be nominated. Students must be currently enrolled full-time students, have a minimum GPA of 3.0. and plan to enroll in the Fall semester.

SEOE Scholarships and Awards

The School of the Earth, Ocean and Environment is pleased to accept applications for the June Trapp Swanson Scholarship. Criteria for the scholarship include a GPA of at least 3.0 and that the student:
- Graduated from SC high school
- Has a demonstrated interest in botany
- Financial need

Environment and Sustainability Scholarships and Awards

Environmental Scholars Scholarship applications are invited from all high school students who have applied to the University of South Carolina’s Environmental Science or Environmental Studies degree programs as well as from current Environmental Science or Environmental Studies majors at USC.    All high school seniors must include their class rank and GPA on the application form.  All current majors with a cumulative GPA over 3.0 may apply.   The scholarship provides $500 per year ($250 for the Fall semester, $250 for the Spring semester) to enrolled students in the Environmental majors.  Out-of-state students who receive these scholarships may be eligible for a reduction in tuition if they meet a minimum weighted core GPA and standardized test score requirements set by the Office of Admissions. (Students who do not meet these minimum requirements will qualify for a tuition reduction in subsequent years if they maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.)

To apply for this scholarship, please submit the SEOE Scholarship Application by April 1st.  Scholarship recipients will be notified before the end of the semester.

The Outstanding Undergraduate Award in Environmental Science is presented to a senior majoring in Environmental Science. The award is based on academic achievement and extracurricular activities that best reflect environmental and/or sustainability interests within and/or outside of the University of South Carolina.      
            
Criteria:  The award will be presented in the spring and will be made on the basis of merit to a student with Senior status who has demonstrated outstanding performance in Environmental Science.  The applicant must have at least a GPA of 3.0 and will be evaluated based on outstanding academic performance and demonstrated success in environmental and/or sustainability research and/or service.

A student either majoring or minoring in Environmental Studies with senior status is selected to receive this award based on academic achievement and extracurricular activities that best reflect environmental and/or sustainability interests within and/or outside of the University.
            Criteria:  The award will be presented in the spring and will be made on the basis of merit to a student with Senior status who has demonstrated outstanding performance in Environmental Studies (ENVS) (either within the ENVS major, or within the ENVS minor and overall within their major).  The applicant must have at least a GPA of 3.0 and will be evaluated based on outstanding academic performance and demonstrated success in environmental and/or sustainability research and/or service

We are now accepting applications for our Undergraduate Awards; Outstanding Undergraduate Award in Environmental Science and the Bruce C. Coull Outstanding Undergraduate Award in Environmental Studies. Eligible students include students in Environment and Sustainability (Environmental Science major, Environmental Studies major and Environmental Studies minor (collectively the ES students)).   

Deadline for the applications is February 8th.

If you are a junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater, and you wish to be considered for one of these awards, please submit the  application on or before February 8th.  The application consist of:

1)            Your name and contact information
2)            Expected date of graduation
3)            Total number of credit hours taken overall and your overall GPA
4)            A list of courses taken for your ES Major or Minor and your ES                      GPA
5)            Scholarships, fellowships or grants received
6)            Faculty-supervised research projects
7)            Environment or Sustainability-related employment (e.g.,                                internships, part-time jobs, etc.)
8)            Environment or Sustainability -related experiences (e.g., field trips, meetings attended, papers or posters presented, etc.)
9)            Participation in student and/or environmental organizations (e.g., SAGE, Sustainable Carolina, USC Student chapter US Green Building, etc.)

 

 

 

Geological Science and Geophysics Scholarships and Awards

Stephen Taber Undergraduate Scholarship applications are invited from all high school students who have applied to the University of South Carolina’s Geological Science or Geophysics degree programs as well as from current Geological Science and Geophysics majors at USC.    All high school seniors must include their class rank and GPA on the application form.  All current majors with a cumulative GPA over 3.0 may apply.   The scholarship provides $500 per year ($250 for the Fall semester, $250 for the Spring semester) to enrolled students in Geological Science or Geophysics majors.  Out-of-state students who receive these scholarships may be eligible for a reduction in tuition if they meet a minimum weighted core GPA and standardized test score requirements set by the Office of Admissions. (Students who do not meet these minimum requirements will qualify for a tuition reduction in subsequent years if they maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.)

The SEOE offers a scholarship for students from groups traditionally under-represented in the geosciences. This departmental scholarship is awarded to eligible students with the goal of: 1) exposing, attracting, encouraging and assisting interested students in becoming geoscientists; 2) increasing representation of students from groups traditionally under-represented in the geosciences; and 3) increasing recruitment and retention of students from groups traditionally under-represented at the university, especially in the sciences. The Dr. Mack Gipson Scholarship provides $500 per year and may provide a tuition reduction for out-of-state students, and can be renewed for up to four years for students who maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and remain undergraduate majors in Geological Sciences or Geophysics. Both incoming students and current majors with a minimum 3.0 GPA are encouraged to apply; the application deadline for the academic year is April 1.   THIS SCHOLARSHIP REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING SPECIAL  APPLICATION FORM.

The Outstanding Senior Award in the Geosciences is presented to a senior in geological sciences or geophysics who has an outstanding academic record in the School of Earth, Ocean and Environment.

Criteria: a senior who has outstanding potential in Earth and Ocean Science as a GEOL or GEOP major; successfully completed at least 90 credit hours and anticipates graduating in 2017, minimum GPA 3.0; evaluated based on outstanding academic performance and potential for or demonstrated success in research

The Outstanding Junior Award in the Geosciences is presented to a junior in geological sciences or geophysics who has an outstanding academic record in the School of Earth, Ocean and Environment.

Criteria: a junior who has outstanding potential in Earth and Ocean Science as a GEOL or GEOP major and anticipates graduating in 2018; minimum GPA 3.0; evaluated based on outstanding academic performance and potential for or demonstrated success in research

The Stephen Taber Award is given to recognize superior academic achievement by an undergraduate in the Geological Sciences or Geophysics.

Criteria:  outstanding potential in Earth and Ocean Science as a GEOL or GEOP major; minimum GPA 3.0; evaluated based on outstanding academic performance.

This award is given on an occasional basis to students with senior standing in the School of Earth, Ocean and Environment who have established a distinguished record of academic achievement.

Criteria: outstanding potential in Earth and Ocean Science as either a GEOL or GEOP major; evaluated based on outstanding academic performance demonstrated by a cumulative GPA at or above 3.75 and a distinguished record of academic achievement which may include class performance and demonstrated success in geology related research, internships, or experiences.

We are now accepting applications for our Undergraduate Awards from students in Geological Science and Geophyics Majors.   These awards include; Outstanding Senior Award in the Geosciences, Outstanding Junior Award in the Geosciences, Stephen Taber Undergraduate Award in the Geosciences, and The Distinguished Academic Achievement Award. Marine Sciences Scholarships and Awards

Between 10 and 15 scholarships are awarded each year to Marine Science undergraduates with outstanding academic achievement (including incoming Freshman). Out-of-state students who receive these scholarships may be eligible for a reduction in tuition if they meet a minimum weighted core GPA and standardized test score requirements set by the Office of Admissions. (Students who do not meet these minimum requirements will qualify for a tuition reduction in subsequent years if they maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.)

The SEOE participates in the Academic Common Market, a tuition-reduction program for college students. Students from Delaware, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia who plan to major in Marine Science may also be eligible. Marine Science scholarship applications are invited from all students who have applied to the University of South Carolina’s Marine Science degree program as well as current marine science majors at USC.    All High School seniors must include their class rank and GPA on the application form.  All current Marine Science majors with a cumulative GPA over 3.0 may apply.   The Marine Science scholarship provides $500 per year ($250 for the Fall semester, $250 for the Spring semester) to enrolled students in the Marine Science major - and may provide a tuition discount for out-of-state students.    

To apply, please complete the application in full by April 1.

** Important note: Even if you received a departmental scholarship for the current academic year, you still need to reapply.  Marine Science scholarships are not automatically renewed each year.  **

Each year, the SEOE awards $500 to the marine science student most recognized for outstanding academic performance, research participation and support of the marine science program through volunteer efforts. 

The Traci Heincelman Memorial Scholarship is given to a rising junior in marine science who best epitomizes the SEOE: academic excellence, research, and volunteerism. This $1000 award is given in memory of Traci Jeanne Heincelman, one of our outstanding marine science majors who died in a tragic automobile accident on the first day of spring break in 2002. A McNair Scholar in the Honors College, Traci was heavily involved in marine science activities and a campus leader. She spent a semester abroad in Australia, and returned to begin a master's degree in biology as she simultaneously finished her BS in marine science. Throughout all of this, she maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average, and had completed all of her coursework for the M.S. In her memory, her parents set up the Traci Jeanne Heincelman Memorial Scholarship. Since its inception, over $26,000 have been received in donations.

The Richard C. Morris Scholarship is given to a Marine Science student based on academic excellence, integrity, and financial need.

Criteria:
  - Completed 30 hours of coursework as a MSCI major
  - Demonstrated academic excellence
  - Financial need

 To apply for this scholarship, submit the Richard C. Morris Science Scholarship Award application. The Richard C. Morris Scholarship will be applied to your student account for the upcoming academic year (so students graduating May or August are ineligible).

We are now accepting applications for our Undergraduate Awards from students in Marine Science.   These awards include Outstanding Undergraduate in Marine Science Award and the Traci J. Heincelman Memorial Scholarship Award. Please submit the Marine Science Undergraduate Award application by February 8th.

Deadline for the applications is February 8th.

Non-Institutional Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded directly to a student by non-USC affiliates, businesses, organizations, groups, or individuals. We encourage our students to explore all of their scholarship and funding options. You can also consult the university's Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

The purpose of this award is to assist students with college education costs and to promote student participation in the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG).
Eligibility: Declared major in Geology or Geo-Science; sophomores or above; AIPG membership
Deadline: February

The Mineralogical Society of America's American Mineralogist Undergraduate (AMU) Award program recognizes outstanding students who have shown an interest and ability in the discipline of mineralogy.
Eligibility: departmental nomination (speak with your advisor or the Undergraduate Director)
Deadline: January and July

The AEG offers a variety of scholarships, including one to offset the costs of field camp, to students interested in engineering geology, environmental geology and hydrogeology.
Eligibility: Student membership in the AEG
Deadline: February

The American Geosciences Institute has a limited number of scholarship programs that are directly offered. All AGI-related scholarships are restricted to U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents who are declared majors in recognized geoscience programs in the United States.
