Reading, writing, and creative thinking are skills that last a lifetime. Our department
offers a flexible major that provides you with these skills. We help you navigate
a changing world and respond to it with commitment and ingenuity.
Here you’ll read compelling books and explore questions that matter to you. You’ll
develop the ability to think rigorously and critically about the texts and images
that confront us daily in the information age. And you’ll have the chance to explore
and develop different forms of self-expression, from analytical essays and research
papers to the creative genres of poetry, fiction, and literary non-fiction.
Almost every undergraduate at the University of South Carolina passes through our
English 101 and 102. These courses help students build the strong foundation in reading and writing they
need to succeed in college and in the workplace.
If English turns out to be your passion, you can join our
dynamic group of some 500 undergraduate majors and learn from 60 of the most distinguished and exciting professors on campus. We
offer an English minor for students in other programs who wish to enrich their college
experience. For graduate study, you’ll learn alongside the 100 outstanding students
pursuing advanced degrees in the department. Our graduate programs include literature,
composition and rhetoric, creative writing, and speech communication.
Opportunities abound to make use of your English skills in the world at large. We
encourage our students to venture into the community, join clubs, work on publications,
and present their work in public.
