PhD Programs

Our department offers two doctoral degrees. Students can apply after completion of a master's program and, in some cases, by direct admission.

Our Programs

PhD in English, with emphasis in English and/or American Literature

Major and minor areas may be chosen from the a variety of literary fields or you may design other minors in consultation with specialist faculty and the graduate director. 

Direct-Admission PhD in English, with emphasis in English and/or American Literature

This six-year program includes a number of majors that allow you create your own minor field of concentration in a second literary field or in a specialized field.

PhD in English, with emphasis in composition and rhetoric

The curriculum utilizes a variety of courses to synthesize philosophical, historical and cultural dimensions of rhetoric. As a student, you have the flexibility to design your own specialization.

Direct-Admission PhD in English, with emphasis in composition and rhetoric

This advanced graduate degree requires a minimum of 66 credit hours post baccalaureate level — 54 credit hours of course work and 12 credit hours of dissertation work.
