Department of Statistics

    Graduate

We offer both the M.S. and Ph.D. in statistics. Our programs are well-regarded and we focus on research.

    Our Degrees

The Master of Science in Statistics (M.S.) is designed to give a broad coverage of both statistical theory and application, with the flexibility to address your particular interests. Our M.S. graduates pursue their futures either directly in government, business, or industry, or go on to pursue a doctorate in statistics or another quantitative field.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics (Ph.D.) is designed to prepare students to be statistical researchers or university faculty members. Based on their interests, our graduates are currently in tenure track faculty positions at research universities such as Mississippi State, Texas Tech, and the University of Miami as well as at more teaching centered schools such as Northern Kentucky, Winthrop, and UNC Wilmington. The program is flexible enough to serve both those entering with a bachelor's or master's degree, with or without previous statistical training.

    Research Travel

An important aspect of doctoral training is the presentation of dissertation research work at regional and national conferences. Each year, we financially support your travel to a conference. These conferences will give you valuable feedback from other students and faculty on your work, a broader view of the current state of statistical research and potential research areas, and aid you in establishing possible collaborative avenues of research with other researchers through networking.

    Employment

Statisticians are highly sought after in a number of different fields. We're committed to helping you find employment after you graduate, as you can see in our summary of the employment found by our recent Ph.D. graduates. During your study, You'll be assigned an advisor who will help guide your career path, help you prepare for interviews and answer any other questions you have about how your course of studies can help you achieve your goals.
