FROM THE DEAN . . .

A new beginning

Hello, CIC friends and alumni. It is with great honor that I greet you as the CIC’s new dean. You are receiving this eNews on August 1 — my first official day at the helm.

I have big shoes to fill. As founding dean, Charles Bierbauer has done a tremendous job growing the college and expanding its reputation. I inherit a well-run program with terrific faculty, alumni and students. Charles has been exceptionally thoughtful during the transition and I can’t thank him enough. Let me confirm that the state of the college is strong: We’re on firm footing, the structure is sound, and the future is bright. I’m pleased to report that Charles will remain with USC working on several projects and assignments. He will always have a home at the CIC.

I made a gift in Dean Bierbauer’s honor. I encourage you to do the same here.

My family and I are excited to call Columbia home. We’re settling into the community as you read this note. My wife Jill and our two boys, Repp (12) and Hinton (9), are sports fanatics so you’ll find at least one of us at most USC events. My boys will need some reprogramming as one was born in Tuscaloosa and the other in Athens  but expect them to be die-hard Gamecock fans before long.

Just to give you some background, I’m beginning my 21st year as a faculty member and administrator. Most recently, I served as head of the advertising and public relations department in UGA’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. We undertook some exciting initiatives while I was there, and I look forward to helping CIC determine its next steps as we navigate the future.

Our goals will remain the same: have the best-prepared graduates; change the world with our scholarship; and, work to positively impact the profession and community through our service. We’ll also continue to ensure that the CIC gets the attention and respect it deserves. We look forward to working with you to help us achieve these goals.

In closing, a big thanks to you and Dean Bierbauer for all you’ve done to make the CIC a terrific college.

I look forward to meeting you and hearing your suggestions for how we can work together to continue to move the CIC forward.

Go Gamecocks!
