College of Information and Communications

December 2017

Dear friends and alumni,

In a few days, you will receive the fall edition of InterCom, the college’s award-winning alumni magazine. You will be impressed. Kathy Pettit teaches the class that produces the magazine, with help from viscom alumna Alison Moons. This semester we had 17 students plan, write and layout the magazine, so it is a tremendous learning experience. You may find a comma instead of a period here or there, but you learn by doing, so thanks in advance for your understanding.

You’ll find a great feature on SLIS Director David Lankes and his vision for the school. David invested a good bit of time this fall in Europe talking about the good work going on here and establishing relationships.

You’ll enjoy learning about the nine new, full-time faculty who joined us from places like Rutgers, Northwestern and — dare we say — the University of Florida. I’ve spent time with each of them. They bring a wonderful dimension to the college.

You’ll learn about Professor Bonnie Drewniany’s “critters” and alumni like Hootie and the Blowfish founder Mark Bryan and The Washington Post’s Josh Dawsey, among several other profiles of alumni doing exciting things and making a meaningful difference.

Last but not least, you’ll find alumni notes and a donor honor roll. I can’t tell you how much we enjoy reading alumni updates. And we so appreciate those who’ve given back to help students and our programs be successful through scholarships and other forms of support.

Enjoy your InterCom over the holidays, and we’ll see you in 2018.
