Imagine this: A local TV station comes to campus to interview a team of CIC students
who have correctly predicted an upset in a major election by analyzing social media.
Or maybe this one: A CIC professor makes headlines when she uses data from Twitter
to predict the next evolution of a growing social movement. Or even this: One of our
classes helps a local nonprofit organization triple its donations by figuring out
exactly what kind of Facebook content is most effective.
Seems too good to be true, right? Well, it’s not. The university is gearing up for
one of its biggest events in recent history — our inaugural giving day, Give4Garnet.
And your participation will help us turn our this into a reality.
On April 18, various schools, colleges and departments across campus will pitch their
fundraising initiatives to potential donors with the goal of raising a cumulative
$3 million in just 18 hours and one minute.
So, what’s our project?
(Insert drumroll here…)
The Carolina Command Center, a high-level social media monitoring and analytics classroom
and research lab that just makes sense for a college located at the juncture of the
growing data and communications intersection. A state-of-the-art facility like ours
Enhance our students' analytics skill sets to make them more marketable for job opportunities.
Bring favorable attention to our college and university within the community and nation.
Enhance the research profile of our program.
Provide training and monitoring for industry professionals within the community.
It will provide professional-grade software for training hundreds of students on the
fundamentals of social media monitoring, insight generation and social media reporting.
Our students will learn how to monitor and report on key events, bringing attention
to South Carolina and giving them real-world experience by collaborating with professionals
to provide social media monitoring for businesses, nonprofits and associations throughout
And it’s the sort of venture that will benefit students—and faculty— in both our schools. What’s not to love?
Currently, Clemson is the only other university with a center like this in South Carolina.
Our goal is to surpass Clemson to have one of the best social media operations at
a university in the Southeast and around the country.
But we need help to create something this amazing. There’s software to purchase, monitors
to install, staff to train.
That’s where you come in. When April 18 rolls around, we’ll be counting on friends
and alumni like YOU to support our campaign. Be on the lookout for communications
on how to give.
With your help, we’ll bring the Carolina Command Center to life!
We’re excited to welcome the newest member of our development team, Clara DuPre, who joins us as alumni and donor relations manager. You’ll be hearing from Clara on upcoming alumni events.
