Background

Kim Jeffcoat is the director of Cocky’s Reading Express™ (CRE), a unique and creative outreach program that strives to change attitudes toward reading through getting children excited about reading, hosting family literacy events, and providing children with their own carefully selected books. Since its creation by USC student leaders nine years ago, CRE has developed into a family literacy initiative that includes life literacy skills including financial, nutritional, healthcare and environmental literacies.

Jeffcoat also serves as the series editor of  Young Palmetto Books, a series of books published in collaboration with USC’s University Press.

Funded Research

Cocky’s Reading Express™ is currently funded by BP America, the Central Carolina Community Foundation, the Junior League of Columbia, South Carolina Bank and Trust and private gifts.  CRE partners also include the University of South Carolina Board of Visitors and the Young Lawyers Division of the South Carolina Bar.

Teaching

Jeffcoat teaches Children's Literature and uses the current examination collection at the South Carolina Center for Children's Books & Literacy to teach undergraduate students how to evaluate and select great works of literature for children and young adults for use in classrooms, libraries and literacy outreach. She also teaches a service-learning section of University 101 (The Student in the University) and was nominated for a Teaching Award in 2012 and 2013.
