Broadcast Journalism Instructor

The School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina invites applications for a full-time instructor in broadcast journalism to join the faculty in August 2017.  The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching and preparing undergraduate students for the professional work of television news.

Qualifications

Candidate must have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in broadcast journalism, with a majority of that experience reporting, producing or shooting/editing for television news.  Experience should also include knowledge of online journalism and social media expectations. Candidate must have a master’s degree in journalism or a related field.  Previous teaching experience and/or experience managing student productions for air will be a plus.

Duties

Teach, coach and mentor as part of a faculty team assigned to the School’s senior semester capstone courses that produce an award winning, daily half-hour television newscast and maintains a student news website.  Duties may also include teaching in other multimedia courses.  Participate in faculty governance and professional service activities.

The teaching load is four classes per semester.  This is a full-time, non-tenure track position.

The School

The School of Journalism and Mass Communications currently enrolls approximately 1,500 undergraduates and 60 graduate students in journalism, advertising, public relations, visual communications and mass communications.  The school moved to its new 55,000-square-foot facility in Fall 2015, which includes an industry state-of-the-art television control room, two broadcast studios and a 40 work space newsroom.  The SJMC offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism and mass communication and a Ph.D. in mass communication, and has enjoyed consistent and sustained growth in its accomplishments in academic and professional areas.

Applicants should send electronically a letter of application, CV or resume, the names of at least three references and three video samples demonstrating professional expertise.  Applicants may upload video samples to an online video site and submit the URL.  All other application materials should be prepared in a single PDF and emailed to the search committee chair.  The search committee’s review of applications will begin March 2, 2017 and continue until the position is filled.
