Graduate Studies

Our advanced graduate academic programs prepare you to impact the world of education through rigorous course work, practical experiences, research and advanced learning opportunities.

Counselor Education

Classroom teachers are not the only professional educators we prepare. A degree in counselor education prepares prospective students to be multiculturally competent counselor educators, marriage and family counselors and K-12 school counselors. Ph.D. and Ed.S. programs are available, as well as a career development facilitator graduate certificate.

Curriculum and Instruction

The curriculum and instruction doctoral program is designed for professional educators who desire high-level preparation as curriculum generalists and leaders. The interdisciplinary degree program primarily focuses on the critical understanding of curriculum theory and practice.

School Leadership and Higher Education Administration

These masters and doctoral programs prepare school educators and higher education professionals to lead organizations as administrators and decision-makers in a challenging and global marketplace, including programs dedicated to preparing candidates for principal certification and superintendent certification.

Educational Foundations and Inquiry

The doctoral program in Educational Foundations and Inquiry (EDFI) advances local and global multidisciplinary perspectives on educational institutions and formal systems of education. EDFI is designed for students who want to become educational researchers and leaders who work toward equity and social justice and who want to study education and politics, international and comparative education, anthropology of education, social contexts of education, and qualitative methodologies. The EDFI program encourages the development of strong methodological skills and houses the Graduate Certificate in Qualitative Research at USC.

Educational Psychology and Research

For students who would like to apply research skills to areas such as educational psychology, research and measurement and program evaluation, these master's and doctoral programs have been designed to meet your needs.

Special Education

Special Education teachers are ... well, special. Traditional teaching methods don't always work with students who have learning, emotional, mental and physical disabilities — at varying degrees of severity. Adaptation is the key, and our programs will provide advanced instruction for candidates seeking a master's or doctoral degree.

Physical Education

The masters- and Ph.D.-level graduate studies are designed to advance professional practice and promote research related to health and physical education, athletic training, physical activity, dance and sport by providing students with a comprehensive and complementary array of course work and practical experiences.

Athletic Training

Students pursuing a graduate-level degree in athletic training should apply to the physical education M.Ed. program. Please refer to the information above.

Teacher Education

At the masters level, we offer two types of programs — one for students who want to become teachers but don't have an undergraduate degree in education, and one for certified teachers to deepen their understanding of early childhood, teaching and learning, or language and literacy. At the doctoral level, we offer programs in these same three fields.

Education Technology

The masters degree in educational technology is designed to provide advanced professional studies in graduate level course work to develop capabilities essential to the effective design, evaluation and delivery of technology-based instruction and training (e.g., software development, multimedia development, assistive technology modifications, Web-based development and distance learning).
