Secondary Education: Degrees

 

English, M.A.T.

The M.A.T. in English, Secondary Education prepares you for initial certification as a high school English teacher through a combination of full-time student teaching experience  and reinforcement of your existing English education and experience, along with practical information about pedagogy and classroom management. Mathematics, M.A.T.

The M.A.T. in Mathematics, Secondary Education prepares you for initial certification as a high school Mathematics teacher through a combination of courses in mathematics, general education, and mathematics education as well as internships that include full-time student teaching.  For more information about specific curriculum requirements, please visit the academic bulletin.

 

Minor in Secondary Education Mathematics

If you are majoring in a quantitatively-oriented subject like statistics or economics, the Secondary Education Mathematics Minor will prepare you for the “fifth-year” Secondary Education Master of Teaching program in Mathematics. Completion of the Minor does not guarantee that you will be accepted to the master’s program, and some majors require additional course work in order to qualify for the Master of Teaching program. Contact the Office of Student Services for information on admission requirements and possible additional course work requirements for some majors. Sciences, M.A.T.

The M.A.T. in Science, Secondary Education prepares you for initial certification as a high school science teacher through a combination of full-time student teaching, exploration of how to best utilize your existing scientific education and experience, and practical information about pedagogy and classroom management. Secondary Education, M.T.

If you are currently an undergraduate student at USC Columbia (or considering becoming an undergraduate student at USC Columbia), the Master’s of Teaching in Secondary Education can be a path to teaching high school English, math, science or social studies with an additional year of graduate study following your bachelor's degree.

All subjects require you to complete specific academic accomplishments for admission to the program; the exact requirements to enter the program depend on your chosen subject. Contact the Office of Student Affairs, or call 803-777-6732 to find out if the courses on your USC transcript meet the requirements.
