Art Education, B.F.A.

The B.F.A. in Art Education is an interdisciplinary program administered in collaboration with the School of Visual Art and Design, and on completing the program, you can become a certified art teacher at any grade level. Art Education, M.A.T. (P-12 Certification)

The M.A.T. in Art Education is an interdisciplinary program administered in collaboration with the School of Visual Art and Design. it is designed for certified teachers seeking additional education. Dance Education, B.A.

The B.A in Dance is an interdisciplinary program administered in collaboration with the School of Arts and Sciences' Department of Theatre and Dance and on completing the program, you can become a certified dance teacher at any grade level. Early Childhood Education, B.A.

The Early Childhood Education B.A. will prepare you to teach young learners from pre-K to 3rd grade, and includes coursework focused on culturally relevant teaching and communication with families. You also have the option to choose a minor in an area outside of education to further your knowledge and abilities. Elementary Education, B.A.

The Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education will prepare you to teach grades 2-6 in South Carolina; please contact the Office of Student Services for specific details about certification procedures and requirements. Your course work will include three on-site internships, and many of your methods courses will take place in one of a number of real-world settings, including urban, suburban and rural schools. Elementary Education, M.A.T. (2-6 Certification)

The Master of Art in Teaching is designed to prepare you to teach grades 2-6 in South Carolina. You will need to have a bachelor’s degree to join this program, although your degree can be in any subject. Depending on what you have studied previously, your course load might be smaller.

You will complete two internships: the first is a practicum with two weeks of actual teaching; the other is a “gradual release” model, where you will work alongside an experienced teacher who will gradually give you more and more control over the classroom activities. In addition to your classes and practicum, you will need to pass the Praxis Exam, which will ultimately certify you as a teacher.

English, M.A.T. (Secondary Education)

The M.A.T.  in English, Secondary Education prepares you for initial certification as a high school English teacher through a combination of full-time student teaching experience  and reinforcement of your existing English education and experience, along with practical information about pedagogy and classroom management. Foreign Language, M.A.T. (P-12 Certification)

The M.A.T. in Foreign Language is an interdisciplinary program administered in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Language, Literature and Cultures, and on completing the program, you can become a certified foreign language teacher at any grade level. Mathematics, M.A.T. (Secondary Education)

The M.A.T.  in Mathematics, Secondary Education prepares you for initial certification as a high school Mathematics teacher through a combination of full-time student teaching and reinforcement of your existing math education and experiences, along with practical information about pedagogy and classroom management. Middle Level Education, B.A.

In the Middle Level Education B.A. program, you will explore methods and strategies for teaching subjects like reading comprehension, geography, and history. Along with concentration-specific studies, you will examine topics like multicultural understanding and effective communications. Middle Level Education, B.S.

As a member of the Middle Level Education B.S. program, your studies will focus on teaching math and science topics like basic algebra, biology and earth science. In addition to that course work that is directly related to your chosen concentration, you will study topics like multicultural understanding and effective communications. Music Education, M.A.T. (P-12 Certification)

The M.A.T. in Music Education is an interdisciplinary program administered in collaboration with the School of Music and on completing the program, you can become a certified music teacher at any grade level. Physical Education, B.S.P.E.

The Bachelor of Science in Physical Education is a comprehensive program that will help you to build a wide range of abilities. These include, but are not limited to using understanding learning styles and approaches, different communication techniques, and the use of information technology to assess and approach the needs of your students. Of course, you will also have extensive training in the skills that will prepare you to direct students in physical activity. Physical Education, M.A.T. (P-12 Certification)

If you have a baccalaureate degree outside of education, and would like to become a certified physical education teacher, explore our Master of Art in Teaching program. If your degree is in a subject other than physical education, exercise science or kinesiology, you may need to complete additional prerequisites. Application deadlines are March 15 for summer/fall admission and October 15 for winter/spring admission. Sciences, M.A.T. (Secondary Education)

The M.A.T.  in Science, Secondary Education prepares you for initial certification as a high school science teacher through a combination of full-time student teaching, exploration of how to best utilize your existing scientific education and experience, and practical information about pedagogy and classroom management. Secondary Education, M.T.

If you are currently an undergraduate student at USC (or considering becoming a student at USC), the Master of Teaching in Secondary Education can be a path to completing a master’s degree in as little as 5 years.

If you previously completed your undergraduate degree at USC, you may still qualify for the program, depending on your undergraduate studies and credits completed. The exact requirements of the degree depend on your chosen subject; to determine if your background meets the requirements, you should contact the Office of Student Services, or call 803-777-6732.

Social Studies, M.A.T. (Secondary Education)
