Honors College Scholarships for Incoming First-Year Students

The Honors College departmental scholarships on this page are available exclusively to incoming first-year students of the South Carolina Honors College. Out-of-state students selected for Honors College departmental scholarships are entitled to reduced tuition, which is not the same as in-state tuition. Please see the Bursar’s fee schedule for more information.

2024-2025 academic year: The scholarship application will open Feb. 16 and close Feb. 28.

Available Scholarships for the 2024-25 Academic Year: 

Established by Andrea and Jerre Sumter, friends of the Honors College.

Award Amount: Up to $1,000/academic year

Eligibility: The Andrea G. and Jerre D. Sumter Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming first-year student whose major is in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually for up to three years if the student has a 3.5 GPA or higher, is in good standing with the Honors College, and remains in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Established by the David W. and Susan G. Robinson Foundation in honor of David Wallace Robinson.

Award Amount: $1,000/academic year

Eligibility: The David W. Robinson Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming first-year student.  

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually for up to three years if the student has a 3.5 GPA or higher and is in good standing with the Honors College.

Established by the Belser family in memory of its namesakes.

Award Amount:  Full tuition each academic year.

Eligibility: The Belser scholarship is a full-tuition, need-based scholarship awarded to a worthy incoming first-year student who demonstrates financial need, with preference given to students who are residents of South Carolina. Recipients must be pursuing a B.S. degree in one of the following disciplines: Biochemistry and Molecular Chemistry; Biological Sciences; Biology; Biomedical Engineering; Cardiovascular Technology; Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Computer Engineering; Computer Information Systems; Computer Sciences; Electrical Engineering; Engineering Sciences; Geological Sciences; Geophysics; Mathematics; Mechanical Engineering; Physics; or Statistics.

Renewal: The scholarship may be renewed annually for up to three years if the recipient remains in good standing with the Honors College and continues to study in the academic areas mentioned above.

Award Amount: $2,000/academic year over four years

Eligibility: The Gray-Mims Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming first-year student who exhibits financial need from Greenville, Horry, Laurens, or Anderson counties in South Carolina.

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually if the recipient maintains a 3.5 GPA or higher and is in good standing with the Honors College.

Established by Bill and Kathi Tangney in memory of their daughter, an Honors College graduate.

Award Amount: Up to $1,000/academic year.

Eligibility: The Patricia Ann Tangney Dumiak Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming first-year student whose major is in the Department of Political Science (International Studies or Political Science).

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually for up to 3 years if the student has a 3.5 GPA or higher, is in good standing with the Honors College, and remains a student in the Department of Political Science.

Award Amount: $1,000/academic year

Eligibility: The Peter C. Sederberg Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming first-year student who exhibits financial need. Preference is given to those that articulate how they will bring diversity to the Honors College.

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually if the recipient maintains a 3.5 GPA or higher and is in good standing with the Honors College.

Established by the family of William Mould.

Award Amount: $1,000/academic year over 4 years

Eligibility: The William A. Mould Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming first-year student who exhibits financial need. Preference is given to those that articulate how they will bring diversity to the Honors College.

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually if the recipient maintains a 3.5 GPA or higher and is in good standing with the Honors College.

Eligibility: The James and Lisa Howell Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming first-year student who can articulate how they will bring diversity to the Honors College.

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually for up to three years if the student has a 3.5 GPA or higher and is in good standing with the Honors College.

Unavailable Scholarships for the 2024-25 Academic Year:

Award Amount: $1,000/academic year over four years

Eligibility: The Bridget and Jason Martin Family Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming Honors College student with preference given to those with financial need, and those with permanent residence in Mecklenberg or Union Counties in North Carolina.

Renewal: When this scholarship is available again, an online application form will be required.

Established by Mark E. Brown, a 1983 South Carolina Honors College graduate, in honor of his father.

Award Amount: $1,000/academic year

Eligibility: The David D. Brown Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming student whose major is in the Moore School of Business, with priority going to those in financial need.

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually for up to three years if the student has a 3.5 GPA or higher, is in good standing with the Honors College, and remains in the Moore School of Business.

Established by Honors College alumni Allison and Paul Aitchison in honor of his parents.

Award Amount: $1,000/academic year

Eligibility:  Eligible students should hail from the state of South Carolina and should be studying science or math. Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BARSC) majors with a science or math focus may be included. Preference shall be given to students from Georgetown, Greenville, Lexington or Richland counties.

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually for up to three years if the student has a 3.5 GPA or higher and is in good standing with the Honors College.

Award Amount: $1,000/academic year over four years

Eligibility: The Guerin Family Honors College Scholarship will be awarded by the South Carolina Honors College Scholarship Committee. First preference shall be given to Honors students majoring in the College of Information and Communications and whose permanent residence is in South Carolina.

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually if the recipient maintains a 3.5 GPA or higher and is in good standing with the Honors College.

Established by James G. Holmes V, the father of an Honors College graduate, in memory of his father.

Award Amount: Up to $1,000/academic year

Eligibility: The James Gadsden Holmes IV Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming first-year student.

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually for up to three years if the student has a 3.5 GPA or higher and is in good standing with the Honors College.

Established in 2007 by a group of former students to honor Jim Stiver, USC Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and former Associate Dean of the Honors College.

Award Amount: Up to $1,000/academic year

Eligibility: The James L. Stiver Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming Honors College student who demonstrates intellectual curiosity and shows exemplary academic success.

Renewal: This scholarship may be renewable if eligibility requirements are maintained.

Award Amount: Up to $1,000/academic year

Eligibility: The Johns Family Endowed Scholarship Fund is  awarded to a worthy incoming Honors College student who has a parent that is/was a service member.

Renewal: This scholarship may be renewable if eligibility requirements are maintained.

Established by Daniel N. Sansbury, a 1977 graduate of the Honors College, in honor of his father.

Award Amount: $1,250/academic year

Eligibility: The Paul A. Sansbury Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming first-year student from South Carolina.

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually for up to four years if the student has a 3.5 GPA or higher and is in good standing with the Honors College.

Award Amount: $1,000/academic year 

Eligibility: The Robbins Family Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming first-year student from Dorchester County, South Carolina. 

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually for up to three years if the student has a 3.5 GPA or higher and is in good standing with the Honors College.

Award Amount: $1,150/one year only

Eligibility: The SCHC Alumni Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming first-year student.

Renewal: The scholarship is automatically renewed annually if the recipient maintains a 3.5 GPA or higher and is in good standing with the Honors College.
