Information for Incoming First-Year Students

Welcome to the South Carolina Honors College! We can’t wait to help you take the first steps on your journey as an Honors Gamecock. Learn about the support, resources and opportunities you’ll receive in your first year below.

Incoming First-Year Advising

One of the many benefits of being a student in the Honors College is priority registration — this means you get the opportunity to register for your fall classes before other incoming first-year students. To take advantage of this benefit, you will meet virtually with your Honors advisor in early summer, prior to attending USC’s New Student Orientation. Virtual Honors advising appointments for fall 2024 will take place between May 15th and June 7th. During this meeting, you will be advised and enrolled in both your Honors and non-Honors classes. Students will receive information about this appointment in early May — so be sure to check your emails! Find out more.

Honors Orientation

Honors Orientation is designed to help you put together everything you’ve learned so far about joining the Gamecock and Honors communities this fall. Registration for fall 2024 New Student Orientation will open on March 20th at noon. Honors students will register to attend one of nine pre-selected New Student Orientation sessions, which will offer a unique and tailored Honors experience with information for students and family. During the Honors portions of New Student Orientation, you will meet your peers, hear from upper-level Honors students, find out more about the Honors experience, and learn how to get involved within the Honors community. Find out more.

First-Year Flotilla

First-Year Flotilla is a time-honored tradition for incoming Honors College students!

Flotilla is an opportunity to explore the city of Columbia and its beautiful Saluda River via kayak with your new classmates. Students can sign up for a morning or afternoon trip. Transportation is provided by the Honors College, and no prior experience is required.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
