No project? No mentor? No problem! Let's get you started in research!

Research is all about asking questions and finding answers. It is a great way to gain real-world experience, work closely with faculty, and build your resume. This interactive workshop is designed to get you thinking about your research interests, and learn how to find and reach out to potential faculty mentors. Let us help you get started on your research path!

Orientation to National Fellowships

An introduction to national fellowships—what they are, why you should apply, which ones might be for you, and how OFSP can help

Tue. 16 —  Top Scholars Meeting

 

When: Tuesday, Jan. 16, 4-6 p.m.

Where: Gressette Room, Harper College

A meeting to begin the spring semester for all Top Scholars: Carolina, McNair, Hamilton, Horseshoe and Stamps Carolina Scholars.

Wed. 17 —  OFSP Workshop: Summer Opportunities for Freshmen and Sophomores

 

When: Wednesday, Jan. 17, 4 p.m.

Where: Gressette Room, Harper College

Underclassmen, learn about summer programs such as NSF REUs, the UK Summer Fulbright, Mount Vernon Fellows, and the DAAD RISE at this session.

Mon. 22 —  OFSP Workshop: UK Summer Fulbright

 

When: Monday, Jan. 22, 4 p.m.

This session is tailored to Freshmen and Sophomores and will offer more information about the Fulbright UK Summer Institutes which allow undergraduate students to experience the UK in a unique setting on a three-to-six week summer academic cultural program.

Seniors: Learn about the James Madison Graduate Fellowship which offers support for graduate school to students interested in a career as a high school US history, government, or social studies teacher.

Mon. 29 —  OFSP Leadership Workshop:
What it is, how to develop it, and how to talk about it as National Fellowship Applicant

 

When: Monday, Jan. 29, 4 p.m.

Where: Gressette Room, Harper College

Learn how leadership is an essential component for candidates in national fellowship competitions such as the Truman, Rhodes, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, Udall, among others.

Tues. 30 — Meet the “Father of the Microbiome”:
Workshop with Dr. Jeffrey Gordon

 

When: Tuesday, Jan. 30, 10:00-11:00 a.m.

Where: Gressette Room, Harper College

Honors College students are invited to participate in a special workshop with Dr. Jeffrey Gordon, one of the leading researchers in obesity and childhood malnutrition and the role of gut microbes. Seats are limited, so if you are interested in attending, please RSVP to BANKSHK@mailbox.sc.edu by noon on Wednesday, January 24th.

Tue. 30 — 2018 Townsend Lecture: 
Gut Microbes and Childhood Undernutrition

 

When: Tuesday, Jan. 30, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Lumpkin Auditorium Close-Hipp Building 1705 College Street

Known as the “father of the microbiome,” Dr. Gordon is an award-winning scientist recognized for pioneering research on the role the gut microbe plays in causing obesity and childhood malnutrition.
