The Impact of Opportunity

In the fall, Rhonda Mims, criminal justice ’89 and law ’92, made a $1 million bequest to the South Carolina Honors College to provide need-based scholarships for students from the Central Savannah River region of South Carolina and Georgia.

“With financial freedom comes flexibility and choice. Perhaps the scholarship will afford a young person the opportunity to make a choice they couldn’t otherwise,” says Mims, who grew up in the area along the state line and gained valuable leadership experience while at USC, where she served as vice president of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and worked as a presidential intern and Senate page. After a career in law, she entered the corporate world and held C-suite leadership positions for companies around the globe. 

I am hopeful other Black alumni will join me in creating a legacy of our commitment to the university for others that look like us. If we won’t, who will?
