Certificate Program in Meetings, Events and Incentive Travel (MEI)

The Certificate Program in Meetings, Events and Incentive Travel, designed with working professionals and industry employers in mind, provides continuing education in the areas of meeting, events and incentive travel, marketing and communication, financial management and current issues of these industries.

Program Description:

The Certificate Program in Meetings, Events and Incentive Travel is a six-month online program for those who are interested in developing their expertise in meetings, events, and incentive travel (MEI). There are five MEI-focused subjects.

Students take two subjects for eight-week Sessions 1 and 2. They will conclude their studies with the MEI practicum in Session 3.

Session 1:

  • MEI Fundamentals
  • MEI Marketing and Communication

Session 2:

  • MEI Financial Management
  • Current Issues in MEI

Session 3:

  • MEI Practicum

Each class will have 40 contact hours, offering four continuing education university (CEU) credits.

After completing all five subjects, students will be invited to the University of South Carolina campus for a certificate presentation ceremony which will also include a one- to one-and-a-half day retreat featuring guest speakers, panel discussions and practicum presentations.

 

Program Delivery:

All courses materials and exams will be delivered through the Blackboard learning system. Upon enrolling in the program, a Blackboard account will be created for you and you will be notified by the program via email with information about logging in. Information about how to use Blackboard will also be provided to you.

The MEI online certificate program plans to start on April 2, 2018.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

An associate degree and two-years of industry experience is required to be admitted to the program.

 

Course Descriptions:

MEI Fundamentals

This course is designed to study the basic rudiments of incentive travel, a vital component of the meetings, events and incentive travel industry.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Define Incentive Travel
  • Explain why incentive travel is successful

MEI Marketing and Communication

This course is designed to develop marketing and communication plans for meetings, events, and incentive travel.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  • Know how to meet different needs of target markets;
  • Identify an MEI theme and develop personalized experiential MEI marketing & communication program;
  • Develop customized program contents pertaining to needs of target markets,
  • Create and develop social media strategies for MEI;
  • Analyze attendees’ feedback and incorporate them for future MEI.

MEI Financial Management

This class is the study of financial management issues related to the meeting, event and incentive travel industry. The primary objective of this course is to have the student understand the role of financial management using analytical concepts and managerial tools to make effective strategic decisions. The course will cover financial concepts including: planning, budgeting, forecasting, risk management, benchmarking and contracts.

By the completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Explain the role of financial management in the meeting, event and incentive travel industry;
  • Explain financial statements and perform financial statement analysis;
  • Utilize financial concepts/tools such as: program budgeting, accruals, competitive benchmarking;
  • Calculate commonly used financial management ratios;
  • Identify factors that affect risk for an event;
  • Identify economic trends that affect an event;
  • Synthesize and evaluate factors that affect return on investment;
  • Identify the ethics of the financial management including Sarbanes Oxley compliance.

Current Issues in MEI

This course covers current and emerging issues in the meetings, events, and incentive travel and analyzes case studies associated with MEI.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  • Identify current issues and trends in the MEI industry;
  • Assess problems and issues that the MEI industry has faced with;
  • Analyze case studies and propose potential solutions for the MEI industry.

MEI Practicum

This is a practicum course designed to give students work experience in the MEI Industry. Since students come into this course with a variety of backgrounds, it is necessary for students to meet with the instructor to determine which option is most meaningful for students. Please make an appointment with the instructor for this course to discuss the options. 40 hours of work experience is required for each option discussed below.

Option 1: Work 40 hours over the course of 8 weeks in an approved MEI environment under the guidance of a MEI Professional

Option 2: Work 40 hours over the course of 8 weeks in a paid or volunteer capacity for a related industry such as Convention and Visitors Bureau, or Convention Center. Such position must have significant interaction with the MEI Industry.

Option 3: For those already working in an approved MEI environment, complete a multi-dimensional project on the job related to a work problem of significance to the MEI Industry
