Students to be matched with mentors at annual event
On Sept. 16, 2014, students from the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies will get the chance to develop professional connections with alumni, begin building their networks and get coached by industry leaders. Event details: Program begins at 5:30 p.m. at the offices of the South Carolina Center for Children's Books and Literacy at 1430 Senate Street. Students must register.
Throughout the year, students and their alumni mentors are encouraged to check in with each other, discuss their industry, schedule job shadowing and more.
Katie Arden, a junior public relations student, was recently matched with Jenna Dingus, '09 MMC, a public relations coordinator at the Palmetto Health Foundation.
"I met Jenna for coffee, and talking to her was an eye-opening experience. She was so helpful with answering all of my questions and offering me opportunities such as shadowing her and the possibility of an internship. She also gave me advice on building my resume by getting involved on campus and volunteering. I look forward to continuing my relationship with her as my mentor," said Arden.
While the majority of our mentoring relationships are within Columbia, we welcome and encourage alumni living in other parts of the country to participate.
