Areas of Interest

Management/Administration

Suggested Program of Study

Management/Administration is a function that cuts across all types of libraries and other information intensive organizations. This suggested program of study is constructed to provide the broad foundation of knowledge that is fundamental to effective management/administration. Beyond the 4 required classes, therefore, introductory courses in technical services, information sources and services, and management are suggested. Note: If your career interests fall in institutions other than libraries, you will want to substitute courses that will provide you with a foundation of knowledge related to your intended area of practice (e.g., archives, knowledge management, strategic intelligence). Next, select one or two management electives that fit with respect to your career interests (e.g., 724 (special libraries), 728 (public library systems), 729 (academic libraries), 752 (diversity), 765 (planning library facilities), 767 (public library youth services), 768 (problems in . . . administration)). The final three courses in your program of study might include 794 (internship-very strongly suggested), and two other electives that will provide you with substantive knowledge for your eventual practice as an administrator.

In addition to the successful completion of a 36-credit program of study, students will provide evidence that they have met the SLIS program core competencies by submitting a satisfactory portfolio that serves as the capstone experience for the MLIS degree.
