The School of Journalism and Mass Communications will present awards to five recipients at the annual Alumni Awards on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014. The awards recognize exceptional graduates whose careers represent significant professional achievement.

The Distinguished Alumni Award honors graduates of the school who have demonstrated a history of exemplary work in their professional careers and who have been out of school for at least 10 years.  The 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients are:

  • Boo Major, '81, Head Equestrian Coach for the University of South Carolina and SEC Coach of the Year

The Outstanding Young Alumni Award honors graduates who have been out of school for 10 years or less but have already demonstrated great professional accomplishments early in their careers.  The 2014 Outstanding Young Alumni Award recipients are:

  • Justin Bajan, '05, Senior Copywriter at The Martin Agency in Richmond, Virginia
  • Tom Benning, '09, Reporter for the Dallas Morning News
  • Stefanie Caraviello, '04, Director of Marketing for Midlands Technical College

Dr. Tom Weir, interim director of the school, sees the Alumni Awards as a celebration of our accomplished alumni and an opportunity to see the unique ways they have used their communications degrees.

“Our alumni are a vital and involved part of the life of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. We treasure their input, their opinions and their continued involvement in our program.  The media business has changed so much, that we are challenged to prepare students for a future we cannot see clearly. We recognize our outstanding alumni for their professionalism, their commitment and their adaptability, and we rely on them to help us prepare our students to be outstanding alumni and to be recognized at this event in the future."

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
