South Carolina Center for Children's Books and Literacy

The South Carolina Center for Children's Books and Literacy was established as a resource center for the state by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education in 1992 to support teaching, learning and research related to children's and young-adult literature and materials. We provide information, education, and support services for faculty and students in teacher education and library science, classroom teachers, librarians, and parents statewide.

Resources

The Center is the official book examination and preview center for the state. We maintain a current collection of books, a small retrospective collection of award-winning books, and two special collections — the Frank Baker Collection in Media Literacy and the Linda Lucas Walling Collection For and About Children with Disabilities.

Outreach

Cocky’s Reading Express™ is a powerful literacy outreach initiative with a goal of eradicating illiteracy throughout South Carolina.  Since our founding eight years ago, we have developed into a family literacy initiative that focuses not only upon traditional literacy skills but also life literacy skills including financial, nutritional, healthcare and environmental literacies.

The Reading Rooster, Helen Feller, crows out the best books for children and young adults from the Center. Reading Rooster Recommends is published twice-monthly on YouTube and delivered across the state to parents, teachers and librarians.

Publishing

Young Palmetto Books is a new series of educational South Carolina focused books for young readers.  This series, published by the University of South Carolina Press, highlights South Carolina writers and subjects in smartly crafted children’s and young-adult books featuring educational themes and supporting materials for teachers and parents.
