Research Interest(s): 1. Cancer Survivorship As medical director of the GHS Cancer Institute Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship since 2012, I have overseen research addressing the experience of the cancer survivor and have presented the abstracts listed below. We have assembled a team of research associates and regulatory staff to equip us to undertake clinical research around the cancer survivor experience. 2. Cancer Survivor Symptom Control: As medical director of the GHS Cancer Institute Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship since 2012, I have overseen the development of three clinical trials relating to symptom control for cancer survivors, with an emphasis on integrative oncology and mind-body therapies. The HRV biofeedback for cancer survivors study in ongoing but has preliminary data that has been submitted for the Society of Integrative Oncology 2016 annual meeting. The mindfulness meditation for cancer survivors has been completed and has preliminary data that has bee submitted to the Society of Integrative Oncology 2016 annual meeting. The acupuncture for taxane neuropathy for cancer survivors study is just getting underway. I am collaborating with Dr. Michelle Janelsins to the NCORP study Co-Investigator for a planned URCC NCORP Research Base Study, entitled Phase II Study of Exercise and Low-Dose Ibuprofen for Cognitive Impairment in Colorectal Cancer Survivors Receiving Chemotherapy. 3. Cancer Survivor Registries: As medical director of the GHS Cancer Institute Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship since 2012, I have undertaken to create registry of cancer survivors and the GHS Cancer Institute. It has enrolled over 250 survivors who have consented to participate in various surveys and questionnaires regarding the cancer survivor experience. I am working with Dr. Jennifer Klemp and the SWOG Digital Engagement Committee to create a patient portal for surviving participants in SWOG clinical trials. See 2016 Biennial Cancer Survivorship Research Conference, Washington, DC, June 16-18, poster, The SWOG Cancer Survivor Project to Develop a Cancer Survivor Portal for an Individual Clinical Trial Summary. Finally, I serve as an advisor to the Cancer Support Community (www.cancersupportcommunity.org) Cancer Policy Institute. It has a registry of more than 9,000 cancer survivors. 4. Medical Ethics and End of Life Care: I completed a fellowship in geriatrics concurrent with my medical oncology fellowship in 1987. I become ABIM board certified in 1988, when the certificate was first offered. I have served as hospice medical director in various settings and became ABIM board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 2008, when the certificate was first offered. In South Carolina I have been a member of the SCMA Bioethics Committee and the South Carolina Coalition for the Care of the Seriously Ill. With these groups, I am involved in the effort to bring the POLST paradigm (Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Therapy, www.POLST.org) to South Carolina, www.sc-post.org. See ASCO Quality Care Symposium, November 30, 2012, Poster #21, Physician order for scope of treatment (POST) in South Carolina (SC). I have lectured in medical ethics and end of life care at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. I have been a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Ethics Committee and am working with that committee to publish a position paper regarding patient requests for physician assisted suicide.
