All-State Preparation

You can hear recordings of all etudes and percussion fundamentals required for the 2013-14 All-State Band Auditions performed by the world-class faculty of the USC School of Music below. You can also download written performance notes to aid in the preparation of these etudes.

You are encouraged to visit each faculty member's page, which includes their biographical and contact information. You may contact any member of the applied faculty with questions about all-state preparation, your instrument, or about the nationally and internationally recognized University of South Carolina School of Music.

Jennifer Parker-Harley


Jennifer Parker-Harley is an active recitalist and prizewinner in several national competitions. She is a frequent performer at the National Flute Association's annual convention and in schools and music series across the country.

Rebecca Schalk Nagel


Assistant dean, Rebecca Schalk Nagel has performed across the U.S. and in Europe with the Bethlehem Bach Choir and the New York City Opera National Company. Joseph Eller


Clarinetist Joseph Eller has performed solo and chamber music recitals throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. He has recorded on the Centaur, Vestige, Beauport Classical and Allgood labels.

Bass Clarinet

Professor Joe Eller recorded the junior bass clarinet etude.  The clinic and senior etudes were recorded by William Casada, former graduate assistant at USC.

Michael Harley


Bassoonist Michael Harley is artistic director of the award-winning Southern Exposure New Music Series. Clifforf Leaman


Clifford Leaman is in great demand as a soloist and clinician and has performed and taught worldwide. An avid supporter of contemporary music, Leaman has commissioned and given world premiere performances of numerous works.

James Ackley


James Ackley is a Yamaha Artist and Clinician, having performed in more than 25 countries with ensembles that include the Moscow State Radio Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony and the Bogota Philharmonic, among others. He has numerous recordings to his credit and has been nominated for a Grammy.

Robert Pruzin


Robert Pruzin is principal horn in the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra and, for 10 years, was the artist-in-residence at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts. His “Bring Mozart Alive!” exposes Carolina's schoolchildren to the the great composer’s works. The clinic and senior horn etudes were recorded by Rachel Romero, senior horn major at USC.

Brad Edwards


Brad Edwards has been a featured trombone soloist with U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force bands. He has performed with Ray Charles and Dave Brubeck. His latest album “Trombone and …” features concert duets with a variety of other instruments.

Ronald Davis


Ronald Davis is principal tubist with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra and coordinates USC’s brass teaching division. Davis joined USC’s faculty in 1985 and was a founding member of The Tubadours, the first professional tuba quartet to play at Disneyland.

Scott Herring


Scott Herring directs the percussion area, Percussion Ensemble and Palmetto Pans Steel Band. He performed with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and was a member of the Northwestern University Graduate Percussion Quartet, which traveled to Germany and London for performances. Herring frequently appears as a guest artist with university percussion ensembles across the U.S. and has presented concerts and clinics at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention.
