The University's 31-year-old School of Medicine (SOM) was established to improve health care for the citizens of South Carolina through the development and implementation of programs for medical education, research, and the delivery of health care.
School of Medicine scientists conduct research and work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the University—and with peers across the United States—that changes lives in South Carolina and around the world.
SOM and its research partners are responding to the challenge of making life easier for older adults via the South Carolina Centers of Economic Excellence (CoEE) program. Multidisciplinary research to foster independence for seniors will be conducted at the SeniorSMART® CoEE. SeniorSMART® research will focus on three areas: SHARPBrain, helping seniors maintain intellectual activity; SMARTWheels, promoting mobility outside the home; and SMARTHome, helping maintain mobility inside the home.
The Center, housed primarily at the University's flagship campus in Columbia, will be directed by Dr. Paul Eleazer, professor of internal medicine and director of the Division of Geriatrics at SOM.
