Academic Phase - Upward Bound holds approximately three
sessions each month during the academic year. Services include
• Academic classes geared toward strengthening students’
writing and analytical abilities.
• Various college and community activities.
• Numerous cultural activities (plays, ballets, musicals,
etc.).
• College admissions counseling, including assistance with
completing financial aid and college admissions applications.
Summer Phase - During the summer, students are
in residency on the USC campus for six weeks and participate in
the following activities
Academic enrichment classes
Cultural enrichment classes (drama, music, pottery, web design)
University 101 class for seniors to help prepare them for their
transition to college
Work-study activities that introduce students to various professions
Group activities to help strengthen team building and interpersonal
skills
Tutoring - During both the summer and academic
phases, tutors are available to help strengthen participants'
skills in specific subject areas. Tutors are usually college students
from the University or certified teachers from the partnering
districts.
Tutoring is required for all students making below a B in high
school subject areas.
