This course introduces three phases of language arts: literature, grammar, and composition. ENG 032 056H: Ninth Grade English (Second Semester ½ unit)
Students review basic approaches to literature and fundamentals of grammar and composition before learning new information about these elements. In the literature lessons, students read short stories, essays, and biographies, Romeo and Juliet and selections from Great Expectations. In the grammar and composition lessons, students concentrate on punctuation; the parts, structures, kinds, and purposes of sentences; and on developing specificity and coherence in paragraphs.

ENG 035 056H: Tenth Grade English (First Semester, ½ unit)
This course further develops students’ skills in three phases of language arts: literature, grammar, and composition. In the literature segments of the course, students read short stories, poetry, drama, and tales of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table. The emphases are on reading for enjoyment and on developing techniques for better understanding these types of literature. In the grammar and composition lessons, parts of speech, basic parts and characteristics of sentences, capitalization and punctuation, and the step-by-step development of a paper are emphasized.

ENG 036 056H: Tenth Grade English (Second Semester, ½ unit)
Students review basic approaches to literature and fundamentals of grammar and composition before learning new information about these elements in the study of English. In the literature lessons, students read short stories, essays and biographies, Julius Caesar, and John Steinbeck’s The Pearl. In the grammar and composition lessons, students concentrate on the patterns, structures, kinds and purposes of sentences, as well as additional ways to punctuate sentences, and on developing clear, specific, coherent, and polished papers.

ENG 039 056H: Eleventh Grade English (First Semester, ½ unit)
The roots and historical development of American literature from the colonial period to 1900 are the central elements of this course. Students will gain an understanding of the ideas and perspectives that fostered the development of our country and of the ways in which our literature became distinctively American. In addition to studying the literature, students will review the proper grammatical constructions of sentences before focusing on such topics as punctuation and correcting sentence problems. Students’ composition skills will be developed, not only through analysis of the literary selections but also through study and application of the basic organizational pattern of a good essay.

ENG 040 055H: Eleventh Grade English (Second Semester, ½ unit)
In this course, students will study the development of twentieth century American literature from 1900 to the present, noting both the ways in which literary forms have changed and the ways in which literature reflects the period in which it is written. Instruction in grammar and composition, with emphasis on writing, punctuating, and revising sentences, and on writing and polishing expository essays, is also provided.

ENG 043 055H: Twelfth Grade English (First Semester, ½ unit)
In this course, students will read many of the great works that have formed our English literary heritage from the Anglo-Saxon period through the eighteenth century. They will gain an understanding of the development of English literature as they read Shakespeare’s Macbeth and selections from Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, Paradise Lost, and other important literary works. Students will have the opportunity to improve their writing skills as they apply good writing practices in analyzing the literary works.

ENG 044 055H: Twelfth Grade English (Second Semester, ½ unit)
In this course, students will further their understanding of the historical development of English literature as they read selections by major authors of the Romantic Age, the Victorian Age, and the twentieth century. They will continue to apply and improve their writing skills as they analyze the many facets of the literary selections that they read.
