Lesson Title: Learning Your Home, The Tour
Goals/Objectives:
My goal for this lesson is to get the students better acquainted with the setup of the campus while learning some history about the school as well. After the lesson, the students should be able to:
- Know where buildings are located in relation to others.
- Know some brief history behind the university.
- Have a stronger bond with their fellow classmates due to teamwork.
- Be more at ease talking in front of their peers.
Student Preparation:
One week in advance, the students will be broken up into groups of 5, and assigned a part of the campus they are to research. They are to come up with a brief history of the area they are assigned, and also be able to tell what each building is used for etc. They should come to class prepared to give a brief tour of their area.
Materials/Resources:
Visitors Center
USCs homepage ( http://sc.edu )
Outline of Lesson:
- One week in advance, the students will be broken up into five groups of five, and given a certain part of campus they are to research. From the location they are given, they should be able to tell about each building and monument that is in their assigned section of campus.
- The day of the tour, the students will arrive at class (a few minutes early would be great), and we will briefly go over the route that the entire class will take.
- Each of the five groups will tour five different areas of campus. As the class reaches each new location, the students assigned to that particular area of campus will take turns discussing each landmark/building, discussing the purpose and/or history. Each student should speak at least once (no one gets left out!)
- The class will continue the tour until each group has had a turn telling the class what they researched and learned.
Assessment/Outcome:
The purpose of this lesson is to get every student actively involved in learning about the campus that is going to be his or her home for the next four years. It is my hope that the students will easily be able to find their way around campus, and also gain knowledge about the history of the university of which they are now a part. Moreover, by working in groups, they should build a better relationship with their peers while learning how to work together.
Areas of campus to be researched:
- Russell House/Thompson Health Center/Thomas Cooper Library
- Fraternity Quads/The Towers/Science Buildings
Horseshoe
- Koger Center/Coliseum/The Strom Thurman Center
